Thanks Jofeljoh! In my ongoing quest to become more educated in kickboxing/muay thai I've definitely come across Tyrone Spong's name quite a bit and from the few fights I've seen he seems quite entertaining. Was this a recent or older fight?

This was the most recent (a few weeks back)

You should definitely check out the video in this thread:

The fight against Spejbl was -86 kg, the fight against Shakuta was at -78KG

Shakuta is arguably (one of) the best in that weightclass (read an old interview here: http://www.muaythaionline.org/features/dimitrishakutainterview.html ). This was really a battle of the titans.

Furthermore, just search for tyrone spong on youtube.com and dailymotion.com. Especially his fight against Mes (-75KG) was very good (Mes was also one of the top contenders along with Shakuta).

Spong vs Kaoklai, Spong vs Vielvoye. Basically every fight with Spong is firework guaranteed

Damn, Spong is explosive. Has he ever talked about getting into MMA or boxing? I think he could do well in either.

Hah! as a boxing fan you might like this youtube clip:

Basically mayweather said he was very impressed with Spong and his boxing skills, especially since boxing/punching in thai/kickboxing does differ a lot ofcourse. As a cruiserweight he could be pretty much a force in boxing with the right trainer, management and contacts.

As for MMA, it's not an issue yet. But since he's young (22), and he trains with some MMA fighters like Valentijn Overeem, who is in Golden Glory (Martijn de Jong, and some other pretty good MMA practitioners) , and he's such a talented athlete, it wouldn't be that crazy if that ever happens.

Thank god for the muay thai and K-1 fans he's now moving up in weight to get in K-1 with the heavies slowly, instead of choosing a pro boxing carreer. He was a force and upcoming phenomenon in -70KG class, he dominated the -75KG (except for one unfortunate loss to Amir Zeyada, due to his own fault), and now weighs around 86 KG and defeated Spejbl, who is considered also as one of the most skilled fighter in that weightclass (and before that -78KG, as he also moved up in weight just recently). April 26th Spong is scheduled for a fight -93KG, so it's going pretty quickly now.

Lol, thanks I actually did see that clip of Tyrone & Floyd Sr. And yes boxing and muay thai skills are quite different but Tyrone seems like he could make the transition. Good to hear that he's moving to get into K-1.

Yeah Spong has to get into K-1....I wish they would hurry-the-F-up with implementing their 85kg class already

Actually he challenged croatian fighter Maro Perak to an MMA fight after he beat Rodney Faverus. It seems that promoter and fighters are serious about this matchup...lets wait and see.
