ESPN is reporting ppv numbers for Mayweather/Hatton:

Mayweather's 10th-round knockout of England's Ricky Hatton to retain the welterweight championship Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas generated a whopping 850,000 domestic pay-per-view buys and $47 million in television revenue, HBO PPV's Mark Taffet said Monday.

That makes the fight the biggest pay-per-view fight in history that did not involve Oscar De La Hoya or heavyweights Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield.

Really solid numbers. It was a solid fight. Nothing spectacular, but solid. Floyd had a Tyson like income year.

I'm a little surprised they did below 900,000 given Mayweather's new-found fame from the De La Hoya fight and the quality of the 24/7 specials. Still hefty numbers though and it should hopefully make the insufferable 'boxing is dead' portion of the MMA fanbase STFU.

The UK PPV apparently did 200,000 buys, which was pretty impressive in a much smaller country (although it was MUCH cheaper) where the fight started at 5am.

That's incredible! I don't think the fight would've done 200K if it started at 5am in the U.S.! As for disappointing numbers in terms of U.S. buys I suspect that HBO is disappointed as well but still putting a positive spin on more than respectable numbers. My theory is that since Ricky isn't as well known to U.S. fans (he really didn't enter the average boxing fan's radar until his win over Tszyu) there weren't as many casual folks who got sucked into the word-of-mouth hype. I hope they stick to the 24/7 format and use it for more fights as it helped rev up interest for the fight tremendously.

And I wholeheartedly second your wish that the "boxing is dead" MMA idiots will finally learn to shut up and accept that there's room for both sports.

Didn't the UK PPV of the Mayweather-Hatton fight had 900,000 buys as reported last week?

Also Ricky Hatton earned like $40 Million for that fight...

There's no way in the world the UK PPV did 900,000 buys.

Just not a chance.

I know it seems like an absurd number but I've read all over the place that this outdid Tyson-Lewis which drew 750,000 odd. Of course that's based on the word Sky have been putting out as I've seen no official figures.

Update:

So UK actually had more than 1 million buys... nice...

A million buys in the UK!

Hatton-Mayweather smashes UK PPV record

While 850,000 fight fans bought the HBO-PPV telecast of Mayweather-Hatton in the United States, indications are the event generated more than a million buys on SKY-PPV. Final numbers aren't in yet, but according to the London Telegraph estimates are as high as 1.2 million. The previous UK record was 760,000 for Lewis-Tyson in 2002.
