Unbeaten IBF middleweight champion King Arthur Abraham (24-0, 19 KOs) is set to defend his title against #12 rated Wayne Elcock on Saturday in Basel, Switzerland. Elcock, who hails out of Birmingham, England, brings an 18-2 record with 8 KOs. It will be Abraham's sixth title defense. The champ spoke to our friends at Boxen.com about the fight.
We've often heard in the past about your hard training camps before fights, however before this title defense in Basel everything seems quite relaxed. Are appearances deceptive?
Thank God, it wasn't as easy as it might look. I really had to buckle down because I don't want to disappoint the boxing fans in Switzerland.
What was special about the preparation for the fight against Wayne Elcock?
I've been away from home for almost six weeks. At the end of October we went into training camp at Zinnowitz and then on November 12th went on to Kienbaum. But as an athlete you get used to such things. For me, the time in the training camps was very pleasant as I could concentrate on my preparations.
What do you see as the strengths of the challenger?
Particularly his left and right hooks are dangerous. So I have to make sure Wayne Elcock doesn't have the opportunity use his hook.
There's talk about you fighting in the USA. What attracts you to the States?
It's my sporting ambition that grabs me. Everyone dreams of accomplishing big things in their life. I want to be super champion. To have several world championship belts from the major world organizations is my goal. If I have to travel to the States to make this dream a reality, then I'll do that.
