I made this thread for Cotto/Mosley discussion leading up to Saturday's fight. WHO ELSE IS EXCITED ABOUT THIS FIGHT???? I can't wait, it's been a great year for boxing but I believe the best is yet to come. While Marquez/Vazquez 1 & 2, Pavlik/Taylor, Pavlik/Miranda, Cotto/Judah, Williams/Margarito, and Calzaghe/Kessler have all been outstanding fights I think Shane and Miguel will put on the fight of the year. I still can't make up my mind on who I'm picking between the two. Every time I sit and think about it I'll come to a conclusion, only to think about it again five minutes later and completely change my mind!! Now that my friends, is truly the mark of a great fight. At least for me.

I am going with Cotto tentatively. Shane at his best has the goods to frustrate Cotto and win definitively. Props go to Miguel for not being a bitch and taking this fight.

The dream matchups to be made following this are almost as intriguing as the fight itself. Should Cotto get past Mosely he fights Hatton or Mayweather. Or Cotto fights either. It's the next logical matchups.

No one else is excited for this fight? If you aren't do you care to share why? From where I sit it's gonna be a thing of beauty.

As for Floyd, after he picks apart Hatton I believe he'll continue to duck both Cotto and Mosley. Neither is a big enough draw for him and they both pose significant risks/challenges.

This the one fight outside of Kessler Vs. Calzaghe I look most forward to. To coin a cliche this has all the makings of a true classic.

An undefeated young lion versus a crafty and still speedy top tier veteran. And the added twist of Mosely just dispatching a very good Bouricqua boxer in Luis.

I'm definitely looking forward to this one! I reckon Cotto's gonna take it, and like US Tomato Can I'm thinking about the possible match ups to come. I'd love to see Hatton-Cotto.

I am a big Cotto fan. He gets some super power from MSG, so I think he takes this with a stunning KO midway through the fight. Oscar could get involved for another big Cinco De Mayo payday and try to keep Golden Boy Promotions in working agreement with the new big star. Or sure he could fight Floyd or Hatton, Mayweather if we are talking winners, and that is after he unretires again. The one that would scare me is Cintron at that size. He is a bad matchup for Cotto & Floyd....either way...WAR COTTO!

I should list the undercard as well, pretty strong for a Top Rank/Golden Boy ppv:

Antonio Margarito vs. Golden Johnson
Joel Casamayor vs. Jose Armando Santa Cruz
Victor Ortiz vs. Carlos Maussa

That card looks excellent. Looks like another mega event for boxing to close out 2007. This will probably actually have more fireworks in it than Kessler/Calzaghe.

I'll be back to put up my personal takes on the whole card.

I can't wait to see this fight.
I think this is a toss up fight, i'm definately more pumped for this one rather than Hatton - Mayweather.
I think Cotto will take with close decision.

WOW..what a card. MSG is gonna be rockin'! Margarito looking for redemption...Cotto the hero...net nut huggers dreamboat Casamayor...and Maussa/Ortiz...freakin STACKED, as I have heard some promotions say.

Margarito's bout is going to be very interesting to me. Depending on the outcome a Cintron bout could be lying in wait. Casamayor I would have to say earned his nuthugs somewhat. He's really only looked like complete poo to me against Castillo. I like his power but he seems to flounder in big time fights a bit.

Maussa I've always really liked since he whooped Vivian Harris' dumb ass.

This fight is garanteed to be awesome. I am not sure if I am going to order it yet, but the four fight event is worth the PPV value more then any other event this year.

Margarito has to win or he is finished. He was already avoided and now that he has the lose to Williams so people in the division can stay away from him. If he loses this one to Johnson he will not get another shot at any top guys even though he is only like 28.

Ortiz is my favortie prospect and you might as well call him future Champion. This is a good fight for him and hopefully he will look solid on Saturday.

I think that Santa Cruz is going to upset Casamayor. I think that Cas is a good fighter, but he was so unimpressive against the drained overweight Carrales that I have been turned of to him for a while. Evenmore so since I think the Baby bull is the best in that division and Casamayor still sits a top the ring Magazine list. JSC is younger and game and he will win.

As for Shane and Miguel, there will be no prediction. I am going to sit back and watch the fight of the year.

I don't think Margarito is finished at all. I think he could get the strap back from Cintron and may be try to unify with Williams again. But agreed he needs to win against Johnson which I believe he can and will.

Santa Cruz could really upset Casamayor too. I'd hate to see it but that is a very feasible outcome to me too.

Ortiz to be honest I am not all that high on yet. This fight against Maussa will soldify my opinion of him one way or another. Maussa is a gamer though so this will be very interesting.

im hoping for shane to win, but i think cotto breaks him down and stops him very late.

I keep going back and forth. I don't think I'll know who I'm picking even as they're making their way to the ring

As far as the undercard I'm picking Margarito, Casamayor, and Ortiz. I agree that Santa Cruz COULD upset Joel but if I was putting money on it I'd stick to Casamayor unless he was favored by more than 2:1.

Hey guys,

I never really got interested in boxing but I'm trying to get there :). Perhaps the average shows they have on Eurosport are just awful and completely put me off.

Reading about Galzaghe vs. Kessler I decided to watch it, some time ago Mayweather vs. Delahoya was the fight that would determine the future for pro-boxing got me going and reading through all your enthusiasm I'll have another go at getting myself into boxing :).

So let's say I like the initiative of this boxing section but don't expect me to be excited in advance of a fight, I hardly know any of the guys :).

Boxing is a beautiful and exciting sport. It's intricacies and depths can make it frustrating to follow for any casual fan. But by the same token it's also a brutal and simple sport. Boxing is transcendent in a weird way by embracing both the science and the brutal. The number of divisions, alphabet soup titles and it's truly international depth makes it tough for any casual fan to follow and know about in a way.

Sometimes I think there's something wrong with me for following it closely enough to speak on boxing many different facets. But don't believe the hype boxing's future doesn't hinge on any one bout for it's future no more than MMA's future hinges upon the result of TUF. Or K-1's future hinges on Hong Man Choi.

As far as getting excited for any event that's up to you and how much you care I suppose. If you don't care it won't matter what event comes up. If you do care than it will become a factor.

You picked a good time to try it again. Be sure to watch tonights fights. And make sure you watch Jermain Taylor vs Kelly Pavlik. You can find it on youtube now. I love all combat sports and right now boxing is right below K-1 for me.

Holy shit. Those guys boxed a classic. I am stunned by what a quality fight this truly was. I don't mean surprised I mean this fufilled any fight fan's aspirations of what this fight could have been and was. The 9th round Mosely did some significant damage and continued in the 10th. Cotto got it together and continued. This wasn't the tentative wait-fest many said it would have been. The fight started and both were lobbing some thunder at each other. Prior to the 9th Cotto was very honestly outpointing Shane.

Cotto truly evolved in this fight to a boxer/puncher. He was getting jabs to Shane more than Shane was getting to him with jabs. IMO Shane made the common mistake of strolling in without punching. Shane had early success by winging nasty looking body shots at Cotto. The problem is Cotto is never going to stop moving forward unless he's hurt. Shane really came alive in the championship rounds.

I truly hope they do a rematch and Shane isn't retired. I'd happily slap down for a PPV of a rematch.

Really was a great fight, there were some really exciting exchanges in the first few rounds and it just continued throughout. I felt sorry for Shane by the end, I was so impressed by the way he came back I felt bad he had to lose. But yeah Cotto definitely went up even more in my estimation.

Terrific fight. Hats off to both warriors of the ring. Cotto is officially for real. Would love to see him face Hatton in a real blood & guts battle OR take on Floyd for one of the P4P "titles" and/or Cintron to test his chin against the heavy hands of the division.

That was a beautiful fight. I damn near shed a tear as the bell rang ending the 12th round (who else wished we could go back in time to 15 rounders so that we could get 3 more rounds?). While there were no knockdowns this fight was filled with an incredible mixture of precision, brutality, and HEART. I'm in no way let down by this fight although I don't think it surpasses Marquez/Vazquez 2 as fight of the year. I think one of the most telling signs of this fight for me is that I've been a big fan of both fighters and couldn't pick one fighter to root for. I rooted for both the whole fight and usually when I do that I don't enjoy the fight as much but in this case I was more than satisfied.

US Tomato I'm with you all the way in saying that I would GLADLY pay up for a rematch on ppv. You weren't the only one who lost his voice after the fight. I spent the whole fight on my feet yelling at the TV. In the 9th I was wincing and twisting and dodging as if Mosley were throwing the punches at me

MZN, did you get to watch the fight? If you did how'd you like it? I wish I could tell you all boxing fights were that good but they aren't. That doesn't mean there aren't several great fights out there though. If you didn't get a chance to see Cotto/Mosley I STRONGLY encourage you to check it out!

The only thing that I didn't like about this event is that it was so good that afterwards I was completely drained and unimpressed with the EliteXC event

Soulrise has got in nailed perfectly. It did genuinely move me. I really felt for both fighters. Cotto moves on and solidifies his march on to top tier boxer and Mosely possibly gave us his bravest last effort.

I saw it allright :). I thought it was a good fight, reading all the reactions though you guys sound more excited than I got. I am still learning or trying to appreciate it I guess.

It certainly did help to follow it more closely. That is what the two men also achieved.
