Hi Gilbert, you will fight Hakim Gourem next Saturday, what do you expect? "He Has a large head so I can pound nicely on it ( laughing). My expectation is that I have won the fight and that he sleeps after the fight, that's my planning."

Have you seen Gourem fight?
" I have seen him fight Dave Dalgliesh and to my memory Dalgliesh was armbarred very easily. You could see that submission from 10 km away. But yes, it's easy for me to say this now, if I don't watch out, I will be armbarred next Saturday by him". (laughing)

With who do you train momenteraly?
" I train with Ivan Hippolyte and with Johan Vos. What ground work ( grappling) concerned I'm mostly a ground and pounder. Also a lot of kick boxing, all is going well. In general I don't let people tap me out easily, I mean I have fought against the top of the world fighters and they didn't tapped me out either. You can be a worldchampion grappling ( ground fighting), but after a few hits you will look differently to it"

When will you fight your next fight? (Amsterdam)
" I'm busy with my new management, White Choclate. They represent als Quinton Jackson and Diego Sanchez. If everything goes well I fight Alexander Emelianenko in Russia on July 21. But we're stil negotiating. Maybe I get a contract for 3 fights with an option for a 4th fight, I don't know. Great business. Furthermore I might fight in the USA, soon I will have a meeting with the commision and I think they let me through this time."

Why would the commision approve this time?
" It's my plan to apologise them and send them a letter whom I received from the referee I knocked out. White Choclate thinks that will be succesfull"

Any other ambitions?
"After my fighting carreer, I would like to become an actor. Jean Claude van Damme is working on a movie and he would like to have me to join them.
Manchester ( UFC 70) did not took place and then we went to his parents in Knokke, but that also didn't took place."

When did you hear that you have to fight Hiroya?
" Monday I heared that I have to fight. On the evening of Wednesday I heared that I may fight him 100 % sure. Great opportunity for me!"

How many fights do you have under your belt?
"I have only fought 2 fights and won them both. My first fight was in Groningen against the little brother of Amir Zeyada, I won on points. My second fight I also won. I also fought some youth fights."

When did you start fighting and how old are you?
" I' am 18 years old ( 61 kg). I train wiht Mejiro in Frisland. I have been training from the age of 11 with boxing and after that I do kick boxing. I started training with Michel van Halderen and I also trained with Bob Schreiber for a while. Orginally I come from Beverwijk, but I moved and started to train with Mejiro in Friesland in 2006."

Any next fight you're planning?
" Perhaps next week in my next fight, it was already planned. This way I already was in prepeation.

What do you expect from this fight?
"Just banging and I will see how far I will get. He has proper technics, a nice guy, but he also has a weak chin. I don't have anything to lose, but I'm not without chance, If I win it would be a major upset."

Will you fight with protection in the K-1 Amsterdam?
"We just heard that we shall fight without any protection." No head gear or shin guards.

Graham is the corner man of Sapp, alongside Pettas.

What happened last year?
"The day before I was at a party from Jan Lomulder, he got married. It was very cosy and it got very late. The next day I had to do commentary for a pay per view tv station. I drank a few beers and was eating nicely and then they came at me and asked me if I wantred to fight. And so I did."

You were supposed to fight Remy Bonjasky, have you changed you preparation?
To fight Remy, you have to keep him under pressure. When you do that with Bob Sapp, he will knock your head off! It doesn't matter, it's okay to me."

When did you hear that your fight against Remy was canceled?
(Aerts forgot when he heard when his fight with Remy was canceled, he asked Harry Hooft, his sparring partner and he replied: a couple of weeks ago)
I heard it like two or 3 weeks ago. They called me with the annoucement that Remy abandoned and that there was one option. It doesn't matter me, I prefer to have Remy, but yeah, now I have to fight Bob Sapp."

Have you seen Bob Sapp yet?
"No, I did not see him, but I heard him"

How many fights do you have in your new contract with K-1?
I have a contract for 3 years and that will be 15 fights including the WGP Final, if I get qualified. Normally I can do that."

Any idea of what you want to do after K-1?
"Perhaps my own gym, probably somewhere in the West of Holland. If I start in the East of Holland, then there is no good base for it"

Who are your Sparring partners?
“Harry Hooft, Andre from Latvia, Murad Bouzide”

For how long do you fight?
I fight like 21 or 22 years now. From my 14 year more or less.

What do you thikn of Bob Sapp as a fighter?
"He is not a real fighter, but if he hits you, he knocks your head off. The first round and the beginning of the second round he is most dangerous. He has to fight, because he is only strong, no technics, all he can do is swinging haymakers."

MMA?
Perhaps Heros. I train with Bert Kops( Dutch wrestling coach) and with Martijn de Jong ( Jiu-Jiutsu guy). Nice to do it, but I only train if I have to fight in MMA. One wrong move or over stretching is dangerous.

Gokhan, you were sceduled to fight Bouzidi before, what went wrong the previous times?
I have canceled two times, of which the last time was before the K-1 WGP Europe 2006. I was sceduled to fight in the Amsterdam Arena but I didn't want to take any risks regarding injuries. Moreover, last April I was also sceduled to fight him, but because of the risk of injuries I also declined that one, because actually I was supposed to fight in the K-1 Hawaii!"

What is your expectation for this fight?" I'm going to demolish him, let him come, it will only give me more power when they talk shit to me"

Talk shit to you?
"Yes, that whole story in the Ringsports. ( fight magazine in The Netherlands)
He can talk shit, like he wants to talk, but as long as he doesn't have my qualities, he will not succeed against me.. and so does his trainer. He is the same type of person. Bouzidi talked, down with the Arena. He should be happy to fight here. They are not important enough, otherwise I would have let the Arena behind me last year. ( he talks in slang, hard to translate)
I really like to fight, I have nothing to win, I even won Ignashov, he is a nobody for me. The fact that I sell more tickets and therefore ask me to fight in the Arena is nonsense. He fought in South-Korea last year and he fought two rookies and lost to one of them, who the hell does he thiks he is? "

How do you think to handle big fighters in K-1?Working with my feet is important, keep moving and use my technics which I posess plenty compared to those guys who are only big and slow. I like to fight that type of guys, it gives me more power.

Any plans for Japan?
The contract is alsmost done with K-1, can't say much about it now. My manager is busy with the contract with K-1, both stand-up as MMA.

MMA?“
I like the game of MMA. I'm busy with it as well, after the Arena I go to train with Johan Kroes ( from Aruba). Perhaps he might fight in the UFC. last time he won a guy who is 144 kg, while he is onyl 70 kg.

"I prepaired myself with Siyar, Alistair and Martijn and the rest of the Tatsujin Dojo, so I had a good preparation."

When did you got to know when you have to fight this fight?
"At first I was sceduled to fight Thiago Thavares, but he got replaced by Kaas.
Since February I'm joining the Golden Glory, that's why I'm fighting in the Arena."

When is your next fight?
"That's in Scotland with Cage Wars in August. September in Shooto and some more fights this year."

Expectation of the fight?
"Loads of acting, banging and me as the winner."

You shouldn't underestimate him and like I just said, I have prepaired very well. let's talk about it saturday.

Do you know where you are going to fight?
"the future of Pride is uncertain and my management is busy with several organisations. I'm not going to worry about it, I mainly focus on this fight. I have a few invitations from organisations and for the rest it can go either way.

Strik force and elite. Muay Thai was also cool, but MMA is much nicer."

What do you think that Lucien Carbin trains your opponent?
"I don't have a opinion on that. It can be emotional when you went throug lots of things together, but on the other hand it's just like in football, trainers come and go."

With who do you train stand up?
"That I keep secret for a moment. In Breda lots of sparring with Leko etc."

Does there ever come a fight between Gilbert Yvel and Alistair Overeem?
"This year not, perhaps next year in Holland."

“It’s cool. People are different, for example I went to a restaurant and the lady asked what do you want?” I was like (WTF?!)

What's your expectation for this fight?
“I didn’t have too much time to prepare. I just fought 3 weeks ago. It’s ok, it’s my job, so I’m gonna give it a 100%”.

What are your thoughts about the Sefo-Schilt fight?
“He had to catch ‘em the way he shoud have caught him, just a little harder against someone like Semmy Schilt.”

After your fight will you go out to party in Amsterdam?
“I hear a lot about Amsterdam, I wanna experience that” Justi: I might have some tips for you “That’s cool bro thanks, I wanna take my boys out and hang out” ( Justi is the interviewer and mod at mixfight.nl)

Sem Schilt is one of the tall fighters and you are a lot shorter, how do you think you will do with the height difference, especially knees?
“Well, Remy Bonjasky was a good knee-er and he couldn’t do anything with it, he couldn’t catch me with one knee. But like I said, I haven’t been training like I should have but i have took the fight because K1 wants me, so they want to see the fight happen. ”

Still have a contract with K-1?
“Well right now, actually I’m on the verge of taking care of... if everything turns out right we will be a happy family. Everything is going to be happy.

How do you look back at your fight with Kaoklai?
“Those are the things that I was still new to the game. You have to adept to everybodys style, not let em pull you into their style. That time I went through a lot of management trouble with my management not with the K1, and I was dealing with a lot of issues. Cause right now I am dealing with a lot of issues, I have 5 kids, seperation and shit. It has a bad influence on your performance, right? Oh yeah, it’s big time, it friggin kills me. It’s like, I fight here and I go home and fight again. Hey, oh, I wasn’t even gonna have a headache from the fight and I go home and (laughs) ... it’s like someone hits you with a bat! Well you know, relationships are hard especialy when you are a fighter. Justi: yeah I know I’m pretty sure you do man (laughs)... Mo then calls justi a 'player' "

Any chance of a re0match with Koaklai?In a rematch you’d probably knock him out.“Yeah most definitly The K1 said this is not a rematch they would want to see.”

You have 5 children, do you train with them?
“My oldest is right there, John. *hey wave boy!* He is 225 pounds and 14 years old(!)” Justi: what do you guys eat?? (laughs) I don’t know man, it’s just genetics, the man upstairs man... He trains martial arts as well; Kickboxing and grappling. His punch is different then mine though, I got a loop and he has a straight right.”

Do you spar together?
“We sparred one time and that was the last time. Justi: Why? (laughs): I forgot he was my son…”
You know he did good, but I just ended it right here.

When is your next fight?
“We are kinda sorting things out” Other organisation? “Hmmmm no, I don’t think so, if K1 comes to agreement with me.”

Do you want to fight on MMA some more?
“Yeah, yeah, whatever K1 is going to offer me. I’m also a grappler too. I grappled in highschool too, submissions as well, I’m a wellround athlete. I’m also hard to take down, I strike hard from the ground and fight hard from my back.”

Who would you like to fight?
I’m fighting him this weekend (laughs). I’m gonna go in there and give it a 100%.

He told us the fight will take place next year here in the Netherlands.


Michael Knaap told us he's going to win from Alistair en he's going to bring pain because Alistair can't handle pain he said ;)

For how long are you in Holland?
"I came to Holland, about 3 months ago. I live and train here now, in Amsterdam… in east (laughs). I'll be staying here for a while. You love Amsterdam? (laughs) Yeah who doesn't?! I will be based here, but I will go back to Australia for Christmas, birthdays... sh*t like that, you know. Anyway, it's a good move for me I am happy with Ernesto (trainer/manager)."

How old are you?
"I am 26 and will be 27 in september."

What do you of your opponent?
"He is a boxer and his leg defence is not that good."

With who do you train in Holland?
"I train with Ernesto in Hoorn, Jerrel Venetiaan, Patrick Berry, Annthony Hardonck… he actually choked me a couple of days ago(!). We were fooling around, I kicked him from behind and he turned around and we started fighting we fell on the floor you know what I mean (laughs)." So we won't see you in MMA? "If the money is right, yeah, why not."

Contract with K-1?
"Not yet, I am not rushing at the moment yet. But I'll be fighting for K1. Basically.. if you get to the top 8, you get a contract. Everyone in the top 8 has to be signed. So euhm, I could get a contract, but we will just see what happens. I will be always fighting for K1.

Any plans after this fight?
"After this fight if I win, the next step is in Korea, the final 16. Whoever wins this, the next step is in Korea. I think saturday, if al goes well, I will meet in the final with either Magomedov or Bjorn Bregy."

What do you think of Brecht Wallis
"I haven't seen him really fight, obviously he is ok. You seen him fight? Is he a boxer, kicker? He isn't really specialised in both of them. Oh ok, he has skinny legs huh?"

What are you gonna do after the fight, afterparty?
"No, actually because I also do Muay Thai. I defended my world title june 2nd. And I am supposed to fight again in Singapore in two or three weeks. They are promoting Muay Thai over there now. So, from now on I am not gonna drink, because if you go party it will take me two months to get back."

Have you ever fought in Thailand?
"I lived there for 5 years, in Koh Samui. Lamai gym. I had many fights there, 40 or 50. I went to Thailand first in '99. I was 75/76 kilo and I used to fight there every two or three weeks. Different style, right? Yeah, I prefer Muay Thai, but now I am bigger (105kg) and can't fight Muay Thai, you have only Ignashov, Krut and a few others... from Russia."
