I saw Gina Carano on the commercial. She was in Toddy's Ring Girls Doc...is she a trainer in this one?
Didn't catch first episode as I was focused on UFN, which was a great show BTW. Fight Girls replays tomorrow night so I'll try to catch it and post some sort of thoughts.

Well I just got threw watching it and it was decently entertaining. The cast of girls chosen is a pretty interesting mix. Brandon Vera's wife is one of the girls(which surprised me because I didn't know he was married so I thought it was pretty cool). Most of the girls instructors of some form, whether its for fighting are getting in shape. I think the idea fight weight is about 118 so don't expect any of these girls to be fighting the Germaine's and Angela's of the world.
They don't show as much training as TUF, but you do know the girls better. It is an interesting concept to have 5 winners go to Thailand while the other five go home. I guess they wanted more winner, but I like it never the less. They fight three 2 minute rounds. Gina corners one girl while Lisa King corners the other.
My only problem with the show production wise is that the girls on the show look better then the girls they are supposed to fight in Thailand. I don' think they ment to, but if I put money on the fights based on the training I would go with the Bad Girls cast over the Thailand team.
Also I guess they are trying to make Gina the model for the girls because all the girls they picked are pretty attractive for the most part. Surprisingly they argue less them the TUF guys.
First fight was sloppy, but not bad. And it was a hell of alot more entertaining then the TUF fight tonight which I am still bitter about.
After one show I give it a 8/10.

2nd episode was last night. Lot of reality TV fluff. Some "interesting" training methods..a weight cut that would make Gabe cry....well....PLUS we got to see them fart at Yoga, get hair did and pick out cute ring attire. Fight was havily edited. Girls did get drunk and they all have someone they hate in the house now...Hello REAL WORLD MTV! Anyways, preview for next week promises an appearance from Brandon the Truth Vera. Lord Gaul is gonna hook me up with 1st episode, much appreciated. Best part was interviewing Thai fighter who cracks on American pretty girl make up and says real Thai fighters don't wear or need make up, that real fighters are naturally beautiful. Dawn, the winner (SPOILER!!!) from last night reminded me of the white chick in HUSTLE & FLOW.

I am really into the show. I thought this episode was pretty good. I thought the Jeanene girl fought very well considering she didn't have anything left. Dawn was pretty well trained in western boxing. She landed pretty much every right hand she threw. The yoga fart was pretty bad when you consider it was right in Gina's face. I am looking forward to seeing Brandon on the next episode.
Also oyo I agree. Most of the girls in the house are pretty atractive, but Michelle deffinetly stands out. This is probably bias, but I hope she wins.

Solid episode three. I figured Vera would win when she fought. I thought it was cool how her and Brandon had the understanding that they are fighters so there was no hurt feelings when he was making her work.
I still can't wait to see Michelle fight. I think that is what I am looking forward to the most.

That looks to be next week for Michelle.
Kerry Vera looks like a legit fighter. Angie & JWP are the romantic first family of fighting, but the Veras are getting there. Lisa (Hill?) seemed to absorb all of Gina's teachings, and with her physical tools and drive, could become a decent fighter someday if she wanted. Gina has really mpressed as a coach, getting to the core of her fighters, despite Master Toddy pairing her off with the "weaker" of the matchups thus far. EP 3 was the best yet. Still don't like the segments where they do "new age" training. Gina led her fighter to Yoga farting last week, and then reinacted that infamous "Ghost" scene this week. They have 4 days or so to prepare and they spend some one on one time doing that? And whats with the lesbian angles? Not that I mind, but it seems the editors/producers seem to push for those "unique" moments inside a house full of female fighters, focusing on back rubs, hugs, girl kisses, etc. I love it. Truth Vera kinda ruined it all by showing so much love to his wife. I preferred when she was getting her sensual massage.
Lord Gaul
28th June 2007, 10:42 AM
I also agree that Gina is doing a good jab and that Gina is getting the lesser talent of the fighters every pairing. What I like about it most is that she is honest about it. She came right out and said that she wanted to work with Vera more than any of the fighters because she was the most like her, but Master Toddy probably seen that as to easy.
I am starting to see to much of a tell in Master Toddy though. As soon as I see him start to hype a fighter and talk about how much they have improved, then I think that that fighter is going to lose.
Global Honored
28th June 2007, 01:25 PM
Yeah, Toddy seems to get behind the losing fighter more, at least from the way the show is edited. If the girl is the focus of the show, her family, etc...she is going to lose. that seems to be the pattern. Of course, we will obviously see more of the winners as the show goes on, the losers going home. Makes some sense.

When Michelle's mom said the fans are going to look at you and say "she's pretty, I am going to cheer for her" I started cracking up, because that seems to bo consistent with the forum talk.
Once again Michelle was being hyped before the fight as the one who was improving and Adra as the the worried so I was thinking Oh no Michelle is going to lose. Then they started showing Adra's old fight in Thailand and I thought man she is going to win. Then my worst fear were realized. Adra won. She was a better fighter and thats all there is to it.
This is a sad day for me.

If there is one thing that I know from watching this show it is that Talent beats heart everyday of the week. I am actually happy for Mariam because I think she has a better chance of beating the Thai girl they showed. I loved how even the trainers were like she is going to be a crappy teammate. But crappy or not she was better then her opponent by far and there was no need for them to call it a split in my decision.
I am curious about how the Thai fights are going to go. I am a little upset that they showed Adra land the high kick at the end of the trailer for next week. It kind of sucks the excitement out of it.

I think that was Lisa in the promo as she defends her "Thai Championship" on next weeks show, to demonstrate to the girls what it is like over there.
I think Miriam and Kerry Vera have legit shots to win. Don't like the other girls chances...maybe Dawn, who shows a lot of heart and countered well in her fight against the much bigger fighter. What are the chances Gina gets to fight on the show? She's been busy in MMA, but did have that break when she was scheduled for Dynamite USA...not sure when this was taped.
Angie Rivera Parr would dominate this show BTW.

18th July 2007, 10:15 PM
just looking at the staredown between Lisa and the Thai girl I would say that she is ridiculously bigger than her. This seems to be the case for all the girls as I believe I heard that the fighters had to make something like 120 or 130 lbs for there fights on the show. Considering how competitive and deep 120-130 is in male muay thai over there, I'm going to hazard a guess that it is really difficult to find a girl anywhere near that weight in Thailand. Crazily enough I think I fought in the same show that Miriam fought in a year or so back. She dominated her match that night and it wasn't surprising that she would on the show, but the editing ruins watching any fights.
Also what's the point with the rules they fight with for elimination, ie 3 rounds, no elbows, no knees to the face. Those are modified muay thai rules at best. I'll even bet they were 2 minute rounds. What's the point in fighting in that ruleset when the goal is to fight 5x3 in Thailand with elbows? Were they afraid of the girls getting cut on the show?
Lord Gaul
19th July 2007, 06:17 AM
Sudoraba it is 3x2 for all the matches like you assumed. Mariam would have finished it in the second if not for that. As far as the elbows go it is a little ridiculous to promote bringing the ax to Thailand if you can't even fight with the ax on the show. Overall I still like the show, but I am not sure what I think the best fight was so far.
My favorites for winning their fights in Thailand are Ardra, Mariam, and Vera.

some one like Miriam though I guarantee will win in big part by just physically overmatching her opponent. If my guess is right all the girls on this show will have 10-15 lbs on their Thai opponents at least. And with the Thai girls they showed as opponents I'd definitely say that some look better than others.

I agree! I don't think it is nessisarily fair, but I can see why they would set it up that way. I mean the US girls have to have some sort of advantage since they are like 40 fights behind each opponent. I don't think the show would do to well if they all got killed in the first round. Speaking from a marketing stand point, it makes since to me.

OK. Last night they brought back three of the Thai girls that the "Ring Girls" fighters fought last year for rematches. They did not look the same in LV. Lisa King Ali'ed her way through her opponent, and even the crazy eyed beauty who was KO'd early in Thailand took it to her opponent, winning back from the thai girl the "world title." The third girl quit in between rounds b/c she didnt like getting hit in the face. Then Master Toddy told the girls about teamwork and yadda yadda...5 chop sticks are better than one..yadda yaddd, which by the way..how in the hell can you eat using 5 chopsticks? Anyways, the girls bicker with Miriam aka Patch and talk about going to Thailand. Next weeks show looks good as they venture over, Ardra and Felice will fight..and it seems that the girls have issues with eachother, with Toddy and we see Dawn going at it with Gina who busts her ass over, of all things, cutting weight in time. Should be interesting. Plus someone is making out in the pool...uh oh..no PDA...is that Kerry & Brandon? Tsk Tsk!
Lord Gaul
28th July 2007, 05:48 PM
Yeah I liked this episode alot because it had the most fights. It was cool to see that girl over come her KO los to win. I mean she dominated. Lisa King was like Ali in that one, because the other girl couldn't hit her to save her life. The girl that quit was a sad story, because she was winning the fight in the beginning. She was landed big shots and using her elbows well. Her defense was horrible so when Thai girl turned it up she couldn't do anything. I think she should have kept trying though because she survived the onslaught. But who am I to tell some one to get hit.
The Mariam thing is getting stupid because now it doesn't look like Mariam is doing anything. The girls are just getting pissed away from her and she is just staying away from them. The team unity thing was funny to me because you could never do that with a team of male fighters.
I also think that next weeks episode is going to be good. Too me the worse talker in the house is Dawn. She always pics sides and always goes against people. It cracks me up that she would have weight problems in spite of the fact that she was eating cookies in front of Jeanine because she had to cut. It also looks like the Vera's are having a great time in Thailand. I really want Kerry to win her fight because she is my new favorite in the house.

Finale was good. SPOILERS................4 win, all but Dawn. Ardra and Dawn seemed to be the only ones truly fighting girls their size, and Dawn cut some 17 lbs in 3 days to make weight, fought a tough Thai girl and held her own. Ardra won by decision. Kerry dominated much smaller girl for early and nasty KO. Miriam looked gigantic against her "130 pound" opponent, getting a 3rd Rd KO, and Felice got a late TKO in a fight she was a bit bigger as well. Miriam had to cut a few pounds and went Crazy (anti-Gabe like) after getting out of the sauna. Ardra stuck her hand in a croc's mouth, Felice slept in Thai gym bed, Kerry crushed ants with her toes, Dawn grabbed leaves out of some guys mouth and Miriam ...well... I dont remember how Toddy masterfully motivated her. I want to see another season...with Angie involved and dominating the field and pf course Gina fighting somebody. It was a good show, better than I expected. I wish they had done more filming IN Thailand then in the Vegas house. Brandon Vera and Kerry's parents were loving her crushing that poor Thai girl into unconsciousness.

Man was this good. I was sucked into every fight. It sucks that Dawn was not able to win, but she was the least of the group in my eyes.
They should switch Felice's name from the bulldog to the Mauler as she threw punches for the whole six minutes of her fight.
I was happy for Ardra, she put things together well and dispite my wishes Michelle wasn't good enough to win like that.
Kerry was simply better then her opponent, not to mention a much bigger version of 135. Her whole body dynamic was bigger and she looked similer to the way Gina looked when she fought in Thailand. She dominated and that high kick was the icing on the cake.
The girl Dawn fought was simply better then she was. Her in and out game was perfect and at the end she was having fun with Dawn like Lisa King was having fun with the Thai she fought.
Before I talk about Mariam, I have to say that the Thai girl she fought may have been the strongest women at her size I have ever seen. She was handling Mariam in the clinch with ease everytime they got together. Not to mention she was throwing her on the ground like she was nothing. Mariam however put together an excellent last round and that knee was golden. It hit in a perfect spot and Mariam took the title in the last fight.
I thought the weight loss thing was a little over the top, but I hated it when it came up on the Ultimate fighter as well.
Overall it was a great show and I loved watching every episode. If it comes around next year, I will watch it again.
Next up is the Contender Asia. I hope its as good.

It's easy for the four girls to win when they have 17 or more lbs on their opponents. Not taking anything away from their performances as they put their all but seriously weight mismatches like these are pretty clear ways of protecting fighters. 130 is a competitive weightclass for male fighters in Thailand, you really think you're going to find that many Thai girls that size when Thai guys are mostly not that big?
I'm sorry but I just have to take issue with the fact that everything is setup for them in such a way that there really is no drama about who is going to win. That plus the selection process of fighters whereby they purposely select attractive fighters over accomplished fighters (not to mention ones with Toddy connections) in order to sell the product. When you see girls on the show with no career fights it becomes pretty clear what attributes are being chosen to be on this show, Cory Hill at least had to lie to get on with no record. It kind of cheapens the sport a bit especially when they clearly don't need to be doing so many "pool exercises" as they show.
In comparison this is what a fight girls show should have been like. Some years ago Hiase Watanabe, WINDY Tomomi, and Noriko all went to Thailand to fight. They were all accomplished female fighters in Japan who have had TV exposure and were well known in the fight circles. And they showed clips of them during their Thai experience where they trained with Samkor and learned the Wai Kru, etc. They fought in Rangsit stadium and though WINDY lost, Noriko, and Hisae won with Hisae winning a belt at Rangsit stadium.
They did it the right way with the fighters wearing the official shorts and clothes (stadium fighters wear the clothes of the sponsers) and in my opinion somehting like that would have made a more compelling show or documentary. Not to mention they fought girls their size.
If they wanted a real competitive show for the 130 lb + american fighters they should have taken them to Holland where they do grow fighters that size. But they won't because you can already predict what would happen against Germaine de Randamie.
Lord Gaul
13th August 2007, 02:47 AM
Saduraba I agree with you, but I don't think the goal was ever to find ligit full time fighters. There were a few and they did well. Ardra is a good fighter and had the type of resume you desire. I would say the same about both Mariam and Vera(she was a boxer first which is good to resume to me) both had the resume's that you would prefer though they were alot bigger there opponents I agree. But I always thought that the bigger sizes was to even the gap in ring experience.
Also when I first saw how attractive the girls were I thought they were trying to copy Gina's success blue print. Good fighters and attractive women equal good audience. The talent level of some of the girls was surprising but overall nothing world class. Mariam was the most talented fighter followed by Vera and Hernandez. The rest did not have a lot of fights with the exception of Felice and were not experienced enough. But I don't know if the show was ever about being more talented are world class. I just think it was more an interesting display of Toddy's teaching methods and his ability to make fighters out of everyday girls. He displays it best by taking girls he trains to Thailand and shows how well they do.
Remember the first show was successful ratings wise, but two girls were murdered and one got a close decision. This year they all dominated except for one and that gets people interested in the show in case they want to do another one. Talent is good, but attractive is better, in womens sports. I am not being sexes I am just saying what everybody knows. If you can get attractive to be talented then you got gold so I can not fault him for his attempt.
All in all I don't think that any of the girls are super yet, but I had alot of fun with the show and I enjoyed every episode.
Comparing them to Germaine is unfair, because we are talking about the most dominate fighter in the World and an amazing athlete. Not only would all the girls be stopped against her, but I think that Gina would be stopped as well. Germaine is on a whole different level. I think that a more feasable task would be Linda Ooms.
I would also love to see a fight between Mariam and Angie.
Sudoraba
14th August 2007, 07:50 AM
While I don't deny that some of the girls are indeed talented, Miriam for one I know for a fact is a very strong fighter, the mismatching leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And while I criticized their handpicking of fighters I do recognize that that is the reality with television afterall fighters on TUF are sometimes chosen almost soley for personality. But I do feel that it should have geared it as a more serious sport than it does at times since overall this feels more like a Toddy vanity vehicle than even that Tito vs Dana special aired on Spike. If you're going to portray it as a sport than it must be competitive and a 20 lb weight advantage for most of the girls isn't that. The Germaine comparison is indeed unfair but I was just a making the point that if girls around 130lbs want to be taken seriously they would need to fight girls their size which you would see more in say Europe, of course Europe doesn't have that same mystique as Thailand and the only other option would be to find talented 108 lb American girls, which is even harder.

I agree with you buddy. But it did get people talking about womens stand up fighting. I think this forum is the most that I have ever talked about womens fighting with the exception of a few Germaine or Magumi or Gina is awesome topics. And in those cases people simply praise the talent and there is no dream match up in site. This was fun to watch and fun to follow. But I have to say that if it is done again, they can find some pretty talented girls out there if they look.
Also I wouldn't go as far as comparing Toddy's show, to the Dana/Tito thing. That sir was kind of low.

Why do you think that? There's really no comparing the two in any aspect. The only common ground is training with Toddy.
As for Sudoraba, thankfully there is one voice of reason and knowledge here and it's totally an equivelant and appropriate comparison between White and Toddy. It is a vanity vehicle, the only differnce is White's is far more profitable and opponents are more evenly matched.

I have actually met both Miriam and Angie in person and seen them fight and I can definitely say that this won't be competitive until Miriam has the same level of experience. Angie really is fighting world class competitors (Germaine for example) and that is a lot more impressive than beating an underweight Thai girl, even in loss. Miriam is indeed a strong fighter, don't get me wrong, but one thing that skews it is that she almost always fights someone who she ridiculously overmatches physically. Which isn't her fault but seeing her fight against someone on an equal playing field will tell how well she'll do in the big stage.
