View Full Version : Assorted Las Vegas MMA gossip

A few bits of information from a recent audio interview with Mike Sawyer at www.f4wonline.com
Frank Mir is now head of security at Spearmint Rhino and appears to be over 300 pounds and "bigger than ever". The new job means he works a long shift 5 or 6 days a week so clearly doesn't leave much time for training.
Phil Baroni is now training more or less full time with Randy Couture and unsurprisingly is in good shape and doing more cardio than he previously was used to.
On the post-UFC 71 aftershow parties:
Chuck's had an enormous queue down the street top the point it took forever for people to get in.
Jackson's was also ridiculously full.
Chris Leben's was absolutely dead. Which is pretty funny.
Andrei Arlovski was booked for an 11:45PM appearance at one aftershow (forget which) and actually took longer to get ready than his girlfriend. I'm not sure who turned that untamed caveman into the world's biggest metrosexual but they should be punished.
At another (or possibly the same) aftershow Sokoudjou was there looking like an absolute monster, impossibly big for a 205 pounder.

Mir should fight Ricco Rodriguez as being the most gigantic waste of talent...
Perhaps WEC can host some sort of superheavyweight match like that...

I thought it would be a nice place to do it there just because of that but Ok, if you really want to spoil my great plans I'll tell you that some other promotion could really well do that! :-P

I thought Zuluzinho vs. Butterbean was very entertaining. Was that Beachball metaphore not yours?

Actually it sounds like Ricco magically transferred his extra blubber supply to Mir. I saw him at UFC this weekend, and he looked downright svelte. As far as I could tell, he now looks like he could make 265 for fighting. I was kind of shocked because he looked so small I didn't think it was him at first.

yeah but they are actually SHW. its ok for them to roll around and fight. Mir and Ricco are massive letdowns that then got massivly fat. different story there. everyone knows butterbean and zulu are just big boned :X

Ricco already won it then because Mir never had much talent in the first place. That was a rumor perpetrated by Goldberg and Rogan. The guy has no record to speak of at any level of jiu jitsu, submission wrestling or any other form of grappling. He simply landed a couple of subs on a couple of has-beens and never-wases in MMA, Rogan declared him "a phenom" and *BOOM* all of a sudden he's an interweb famous grappling juggernaut.
Phooey. Don't you dare believe that hype.

Come on guys...Mir has a pretty good excuse. Ricco's is just personal desire, but Mir was physically fucked up.

i cant believe paulo filho isnt going straight into the ufc. he's far better than most of the middeweights even if he is dull as hell...

Mayhem vs Filho could be interesting, other than that who do they have at 185? Miura and Riggs?
Waste of time really, especailly when there 185 division is the weakest of all their divisions.

Eh, if he signs a three-fight deal with WEC and wins his three fights on live national TV, then moves to UFC....

yeah, i suppose a little stint in wec might help build him up for his ufc debut. most US mma fans would be aware of him already though...
unfortunatly for filho his reputation as a top fighter is secondary to his reputation as a boring fighter...
i think mayhem might bring out the best in him though, that'd be a great fight...

That's interesting. I don't know what kind of contract he had with WFA but whatever it was, Ufc has it now so perhaps a comeback? :)

The competition is weaker in WEC, he could probably finish those guys.
