In an interview with nokaut.com in April Karo said:
For the record, I fought Sokoudjou in Judo before.
Justin (Nokaut): Oh yeah?
Karo: Yeah I beat him in Judo before, actually. He won the US Open in open-weight. After that I won against him. He won the US Open, which is a very, very big tournament. When he came to this country he said that nobody could beat him in Judo, and he was killing everybody. Then I went against him and he was like 260 [pounds], all muscle. His Judo gi is supposed to be loose so you can grip, but it was tight on his upper body. But he’s won a lot of good tournaments, a lot of big tournaments, he’s very strong- but it’s funny man, I see him fighting and I beat that guy in Judo. I was the first guy to beat him in the country actually.
Now the video is available.

Well that's not really fair. Karo was a blue or black belt at the time while Sokou was only white.
Seriously though, that camera work was real lazy at the end. I had to watch it 3 times before I could figure out what happened. Any of you judo and/or grappling guys have anything to say about this?

I think they were wearing those belts so that the ref could tell who was who, it is like that in general because both wore white gi's. I think both were black belts at the time. That is what I have read.

Very very nice, thx a lot.
I think that Sokou was already black belt, he won titles in africa before going to USA, he was even scheduled to fight at Olympics and beleive me, there is no white belt in the olympics! So I'm pretty sure they were both black belt. Interesting to know that Karo fought at HW in Judo!

I have to say, my heart goes out to Karo.
Having competed open weight in grappling, and being in against a natural like that, it does things to you mentally.
It's always good to see a fighter and their original discipline against someone we know.

Can someone explain what it was that Karo actually did to win?

The referee shall announce "Ippon" when in his opinion an applied technique corresponds to the following criteria:
* (a) When a contestant with control throws the other contestant largely on his back with considerable force and speed.
* (b) When a contestant holds with osae-komi waza the other contestant, who is unable to get away for 30 seconds after the announcement of "Osae-komi".
* (c) When a contestant gives up by tapping twice or more with his hand or foot or says "Maitta" (I give up), generally as a result of a grappling technique, shime waza (strangle) or kansetsu waza (arm lock).
* (d) When the effect of a strangle technique or arm lock is sufficiently apparent.
Karo did (a).

It's a variation of Kuchiki-daoshi. It's considered one of the ugliest throws in judo (at least in Japan), since you have to use a hand to pick up you opponent's leg. It just doesn't look as clean or beautiful as most other throws. Incidentally, former Soviet judoka, especially the ones from Georgia, tend to use that waza a lot (and Armenia, where Karo is from, is right next to Georgia, ha).
Sokoudjou didn't do a thing in that match, although he probably outweighed Karo by a lot. Both received shido (a penalty) twice due to the lack of aggressiveness, and kakenige-chui (a heavier penalty) once due to an attempt to do a hopeless waza (so as to make it look like he is doing something), so that match was utter shit until the Kuchiki-daoshi ippon by Karo. But in an open weight match, it's usually the fault of the heavier guy that the match becomes "boring".
Sokoudjou being a world class judoka is a myth. His only achievement in judo is winning the US Open in 2001, which is a mickey mouse tournament in international judo. He didn't win any legit big African tournament either (it's almost always North Africans that win those tournaments). He bragged about beating Shinohara, a great Japanese judoka, but it was actually part of his demonstration. He did 12-nin nuki (12 opponents in a row), and Sokoudjou was the 8th or 9th guy. He was the only man who managed to beat Shinohara on decision, but Shinohara had already fought 7 or 8 opponents in a row at that point.

All in all, judo is a lot like K-1 in that anything that contains the words "the US" doesn't mean much. It's massively popular in France, so no wonder it's non-existent in the US. :)
It's just dominated by East Asians, Europeans and to some extent Cubans and Brazillians. I'm sure many UFC fans in the US think that Karo can beat Fedor in judo, but considering that Fedor was at one point one of the candidates to make the Russian national team (unless he is lying about that), that's just bloody unlikely. Georgians are the best among the former Soviets in judo, but Russians are no joke at all either (with their president being a black belt!). Much, much better than the USians, for sure.

I can assure you that you'll never, ever see anyone like Koga until human beings perish on this planet. His ippon-zeoi is just a thing of beauty. You CANNOT execute such a perfect ippon-zeoi in so many serious matchs. Never.

I just love those "British" words like "bloody", "bollocks", "fuck all", "bugger all", "arse" and so on. Especially "bugger all", which a friend of mine whom I studied with (Englishman) used a lot. :)

I thought Sokou did loose this fight vs Karo and then won the open weight title in the same competition, so I guess they meet in the regular tournament which is obviously HW due to Sokou weight. BTW I might be wrong, my english sucks homeless peoples balls.

That is lovely stuff!
I like that Ko-uchi-maki-komi that is repeated a couple of times somewhere around half way. He camouflages it really nice as if he is going for a seoi nage or something.
I am especially interested in that throw because I have to know it for my green belt exam...
On topic:
That fight is indeed not the most exciting one :). And to be honest, I don't care too much about Sokoudjou's judo credentials :)....

im just wondering coz i saw the fight that he lost today and he looked average at best... of course i realise he's beaten two of the very best in the business to contradict that but they're hardly top class strikers...
but then again he's only 22, barely older than i am...

The most importent thing in judo is the control of the grip. Soko looked like he don't know what he's doing and let the opponent weaker than him to take control of the grip

When their car broke down a Jew, an Indian and an Australian knocked on a farmer's door to ask for accommodation for the night.
"I only have room for two, one of you will have to sleep in the barn," said the farmer. "Alright, I will," said the Jew.
But 5 minutes later there was a knock at the door. "There's a pig in the barn, I can't sleep in there," said the Jew.
"Okay, I'll go," said the Indian.
Five minutes later there was a knock on the door. "There is an un-sacred cow in the barn," he said.
"No worries mate, I'll go," said the Australian.
Five minutes later there was yet another knock at the door. It was the pig and cow.
