K-1 have started plans to branch all over he world and hold a world cup of sorts by 2011.
They will be holding events to find champs in Lightweight (60kg), Middleweight (70kg), Light-heavy (probably 85kg), Heavyweight (100kg) and Super heavyweights (100+kg) in major areas around the world and bring them together to kick-off the first of their world cup series to find the world champion in each catagory.
2011 was chosen as it has no Olympic/World Cup event so they can maximize their coverage and they have put together a massive list of 135 countries where they are already able to broadcast it.

they seem to be serious about this too...not just grabbing some media hype and keeping PRIDE's stuff out of the headlines.

True, but the actualy event being in 4 years means they need to get their finger out of their butt and make events in each region to get legit champions in each division first. That should take the best part of 3 or 4 years.

So uhm... I don't think I understand this correctly.
How are they gonna do this? Are they gonna keep the stronger countries in mind?
Something like the following regions:
North-America
South-America (or these two put together)
Africa
Asia
Oceania
Europe
And because of the bigger talent pool a different Thailand/Holland tournament as well.
Especially in Europe and Thailand it can be a big qualification format to have a champion in some weightclasses... Just look at the It's Showtime trophy -75KG tournament...
By the way I think the gap between middleweight and lightheavyweight might just a little bit too big. The elite guys now -75 KG may have a serious problem to be in one of them.

Seems they are still working on sorting it all out as we speak. Don't expect a full explanation any time soon....I expect we will get bits of info drip in now and then.

The weight was an education guess between the person in K-1 and spoke to and myself that they would probably keep it in tune with HERO's which is 85kg. If they went with 80kg then the 20kg gap between in and HW would be huge as well. Anyway, it is not set in stone as far as I (we) know, but I expect anyone at 75kg will either be adding some weight or cutting some.

Light-heavy (probably 85kg),
In the official press presentation for this LHW was mentioned as 85kg by Tanikawa.

it seems like Tanikawa is planning on doing this for each country.
His way of explaning it was "In American well find the American champions, in Holland the Dutch champions, in Russian the Russian champion, in England the English champion, etc"

I like Australia's chances, especially with Carnage in the 85kg category which should suit him perfectly. Add in JWP, Slowinski and Graham.. maybe Schaffa as a reserve at 70 and Dane NTG at 60? We might not do so bad.

This is very interesting. If it happens, K-1 will really push all other organizations out of the stage. Kb and mt will mean only K-1 when they take over all weight classes...

You should have asked that guy the same question as boobs asked you :-)
OT - sounds very interesting. And hopefully they can announce more info on it soon. Looking forward to see the lighter fighters.
