PRIDE 2006 Open Weight Grand Prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic successfully underwent surgery to remove a small piece of bone in his left foot. According to the Croatian news site ‘Justranji’, Mirko will return home on Monday from Switzerland and is expected to rehabilitate his foot for two weeks before training again.

Seems they moved it, so thats the new story.

To be honest though, I`d rather not see him fight and possibly injure himself again, or worse, lose before fighting Fedor and we have the whole 2003/04 drama all over again.

I'm glad he WANTS to fight. I've had the feeling that he's not been very enthusiastic about fighting recently. Talking about quitting and all that jazz...

But yeah let's hope he doesn't make the injury worse by fighting too soon.

His next fight should be against Fjodor not against some can on NYE. But that's just my opinion ...

It is rumoured his opponent is Kharitanov which sounds good to me.

That is NOT an easy fight. I´m gonna bet on Sergei if that fight is scheduled.

Aleks and Sergei will be the future of Pride HW in 3 years from now.

Possibly a fight-of-the-year candidate.

OK, enough of laziness ;-)
Here is the story from cro news papers.

1st article is from Jutarnji list and was written prior to the operation:
http://www.jutarnji.hr/sport/borilacki_sportovi/clanak/art-2006,10,25,filipovic_operacija,47801.jl

Clinic Bruderholz is the place Cro cop’s next ‘fight’ is scheduled. After many months of fighting with a broken bone in his ankle, Filipovic is undergoing surgery tomorrow to solve this problem once and for all.

- I decided to have the operation so I could be 100% ready for the next season, without physical and mental breaks due to this unpleasant injury. I don’t know details of the operation, but I do know it will be over relatively fast and that the surgery will be performed by dr. Heinz Widmer.

Filipovic believes that he could go back to full training as soon as in mid November:

- I don’t plan to just lay in my bed after the operation. I will follow doctors’ instructions and won’t train martial arts, but I will work on my cardio. It is my wish to fight at pride’s NYE show. If I fight it will probably be against some easier opponent, and after that fight I will be interested only in title fight.

----------------------------------
2nd article, also from Jutarnji, this time after the operation, titled ‘It is boring without trainings’
http://www.jutarnji.hr/sport/borilacki_sportovi/clanak/art-2006,10,27,cro_cop_oporavak,48112.jl

Only 24 hours after Dr. Karl-Heinz Widmer removed a piece of broken bone from his ankle Cro cop is already thinking about trainings.

- I have no idea how it went as I slept during the entire operation. They gave me an injection into my spine and I fell asleep. They were supposed to use only local anesthesia but they didn’t, so I just woke up in my room after it was all over. I feel good, I can already walk, and I believe that they will send me home this Monday.

Filipovic thinks that he injured himself in fight with Mark Hunt. In each following fight he felt strong pain while kicking with his left leg. And since therapeutic efforts did not help him surgery was his only option.

- I am just looking at this bone fragment that was removed from my foot. I have it in a glass jar and I can say that it is not small at all. It was floating in my ankle, but I believe dr. Widmer removed everything and there won’t be any more problems.
- It is interesting to see how much they care about me; last nigh they must have visited me every ten minutes. This is the treatment one gets in private clinics where you need to pay a lot of money for their services.
- I hope I will fight on NYE. I will have to avoid using kicks with my left leg, but I won’t give up (on fighting at NYE).
- About Fjodor … I have no objections on fighting him in February 2007.

3rd article, from Vecernji list, after the operation, titled: ’Already 24 hours after the surgery I was training in my room’
http://www.vecernji-list.hr/newsroom/sports/more/663682/index.do

This Saturday morning in Switzerland’s second largest city seemed like noone lives in Basel. There was not one person in the streets until noon, and one can even hardly hear trams that pass in front of hotel Radisson. And this is the hotel in which Mirko and his manager Zvonimir Lucic reside.

But these prefect conditions did not help Mirko catch some sleep. Dr Widmer already told him that he will have to ‘count sheep’ few more nights until he is able to sleep properly again.

“I couldn’t sleep whole night, I was awake until 4am” – told us Mirko in one of hotel’s restaurants following morning. An hour earlier we came there to have a morning coffee with Z. Lucic and Ivan Tezak (a person that arranger everything, we was also the one to bring Janica and Ivica Kostelic to the same Clinic) (if you follow skiing, these name should mean something, otherwise just think of them as big, and I mean BIG sport stars in Croatia).
Mirko came in a bad mood, but as the conversation was developing his cheerful spirit took over and that big smile that follows him everywhere appeared on his face.

“I am not used to surgeries. Thank God, this was the first time I had to undergo surgery. I have no problem stepping in the ring to face anyone, but when I saw that needle in doctor’s hands I felt uneasy.”

“I feel very good right now. I cannot lean fully on my leg, but the operation was successful and that’s the most important stuff.”

When can you go back to trainings?
“I am already training. OK, I may not be hitting a big bag, but last night I did few hundred push-ups. Dr. Widmer is satisfied, he recommended me to have ten days of rest and then to start with serious training.”

“I will probably fight at NYE show, but I am already thinking about Fjodor, I have some old debts that I need to pay him back. It is not my job to arrange fights, but I guess the title fight could happen in February 2007 in Las Vegas.”

Fedor wouldn't be a good first fight back when he's had surgery.

When is he gonna fix that nose of his? I would have thought getting both done at the same time would be a logical choice...

Thanks as usual loreia :)

not smart at all. I really wonder about Mirko sometimes. Probably the most dangerous fighter in the world, but his managements just are fucked up.
