Well he dropped to 113 kg. He looked lean with good stamina and sharp reflexes, but I have my doubts. It looks like he doesn't eat meat anymore.

There are some advantages to this, but there are also some disadvantages. You can become very weak, I know some guys who stopped eating meat as well and in the end they couldn't even climb the stairs anymore. One of those guys was almost in the same state as someone who has blood cancer and he had to start eating meat again in order to get fit.

Do you know any fighters who are vegetarian as well and what do you think of this.

Not sure specifics, but Randy Couture went to a raw vegetable based diet to cut from 240ish to 205 when he dropped weight classes in UFC. I know he eliminated dairy and went to veggie and greens powder based diet, but I assume he still worked in the occassional protein from various meat sources too.

I don't think there's a problem with skipping meat. You can become very weak, but only if you're an idiot. Keep counting your proteins, vitamins, and minerals, and it shouldn't be a problem. The only vegetarian fighter that comes to mind right now is MMA fighter Jake Shields.

I've been vegetarian for nearly 20 years. I don't fight but have played plenty of competitive sports and never any problem.

I agree with Titan. I think being a vegetarian probably has more pros than cons as Randy Couture has shown (not only does it increase your life expectancy, but it increases the length of your sporting career too)--but it's important to avoid becoming deficient in anything, this doesn't mean supplmentation is essential but it can be helpful. The whole "vegetarians can't engage in intense sport" idea is pretty idiotic/ignorant, but I can see how such an idea comes about. My girlfriend for example became a vegetarian and did nothing to provide her body with iron and thus became very weak, pale, etc. A simple iron supplement fixed this pretty easily.

Yes, as long as you have enough proteins from vegatable sources it isn't a problem. He eats lots of Tufu--> Soya proteins so he RDI recommended daily intake is assured.

I read in another thread on kakutougi that Jerome follows an blood group diet. He has blood group A, so meat makes him fat and his body produces toxics when eating certain meat, like steaks and stuff.

I don't know if it works but if he feels better and keeps his stength, why not trying it?

I have a big book at home about blood groups diets and what you should and shouldn't eat when you have a certain blood group.

I'm also a vegetarian, and the most important nutrient that comes from meat (protein) can be achived by various other sources.

Michael McDonald is vegetarian for many years too (I remember reading this somewhere), and he has incredible physical features...

The Jerome Diet plan thread is "K1 Pics and Results: Osaka 09/30/06"

Tonypol posted his interview comments after the fight and it's briefly mentioned there.

Ha, I will now definitely laugh when I hear the whole "vegetarians can't get huge and ripped" line again.

All this time I've been rebutting with, "yeah, well look at Brad Pitt and Chris Evans, they're vegetarians and they're big and ripped".

1) Jerome started out eating meat.

2) Brad Pitt is not big. He is ripped however.

Michael is not a vegetarian. It was a few years back that we talked about it, so my memory isn't great, but he does not eat meat often, and when he does, it's mostly turkey and chicken.

To my undestanding, the blood group diet is somewhat a fad or a fringe idea, that has not convinced the mainstream science. Following it is probably still safe, i think.

But what is worrying though, I read an argument that overconsuming soy based products may lead to e m a s c u l a t i o n, because soy contains precursors of female sex hormones ...

JLB just told me he stopped the red meat.. Not all the meat. So he eat chicken, fish etc....

Well, many stop eating "red" meat because of health issues, but to me not eating meat and it's products aren't really a question of health, but rather a "moral" choice. But to each, his own beliefs... Of course, and he knows this better than any of us, it is advisable to always have the attention of a nutritionist, specially since he is an elite athlete in such a physically demanding sport.

Smart... that is pretty much what I do. I think red meat tastes good, but is a lot harder to digest. It seems like chicken and fish make me feel less sluggish.

I still think red meat is a lot better than dairy though.
