Preparing for their respective bouts against opponents Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi, Akihiro Gono and Kazuo Misaki held an open practice in front of attending media for PRIDE's Bushido 12 card.
Gono displayed his stand-up in two rounds of sparring, one three minutes and another lasting two. Media spectators were impressed by the intensity of Gono's sharpened middle kick, from both the left and right leg. Gono spoke to a strong reliance on his hands for offense in the coming bout against the Armenian striker, assuring those on-hand that his kicks would be used "only if it were an emergency." The GRABAKA fighter realized that Mousasi was substantially taller than himself, but still displayed some excitement at the thought of finishing the fight via high kick, "like the good 'ol days," Gono reminisced.
The inevitable question concerning the possible appeareance of Gono's alter-ego, 'DJ.GOZMA', was also voiced. Gono, in response, laughed that, "he'll definitely make an appeareance. We actually have a budget this time, have been practicing the choreography, and are aiming at a longer entrance than last time." Gono closed the issue on a note both humourous and cause for some concern: "I hope I don't gas before the fight."
Teammate Misaki performed a similiar regimen of sparring. In the segment focused on ground fighting, Misaki showcased a considerably improved aggressiveness from the top, kicking at his butt-scooting partner standing and pursuing 'ground 'n pound' vigorously. In the stand-up portion, Misaki stole the breath of all on hand as he executed beautiful flying knee attacks one after another. Misaki indicated that the attack would be used in the coming bout.
In an interview, Misaki had taken great pride in proving Japan to be a strong contender in the MMA world, and that his bout against the reigning American champion would be the showcase for such a claim. He also declared that he'd resolved to never lose twice to the same person. "Above all, I just want to win" was the bottomline to Misaki's attiude concerning the Welterweight Grand Prix Quarterfinal
