Makoto Takimoto (Yoshida Dojo) vs. Gegard Mousasi (Jurojin Gym) = I hope for Gegard by early stoppage as Tak annoys me.
Ryo Chonan (Team M.A.D.) vs. Joey Villasenor (Jackson's Submission Fighting) = Chonan needs a win, but he could be up for his #3 KTFO if he is not very careful
Akihiro Gono (Team GRABAKA) vs Hector Lombard (Yoshida Dojo) = Gono by KO R2
Phil Baroni (Hammer House) vs Kazuo Misaki (Team GRABAKA) = Phil by KO R1
Denis Kang (American Top Team) vs Murilo Rua (Chute Boxe) = Kang by ref stop R2
Murilo Bustamante (Brazilian Top Team) vs Amar Suloev (Red Devil Sport Club) Busta by Sub R2
Paulo Filho (Brazilian Top Team) vs Yoon Dong Sik (Takada Dojo) = Filho by sending us all to sleep
Hayato Sakurai (Mach Dojo) vs Olaf Alfonso (Odo Fight Club) = Mach by KO R2
Tatsuya Kawajiri (T-Blood) vs Charles Bennett (Freelance) = Kawajiri by brutal beatdown.

Makoto Takimoto (Yoshida Dojo) vs. Gegard Mousasi (Jurojin Gym) = I dont know Gegard. Cant call this. Im hoping he wins though...
Ryo Chonan (Team M.A.D.) vs. Joey Villasenor (Jackson's Submission Fighting) = Im hoping Chonan by a highlight real KO, he definately needs it.
Akihiro Gono (Team GRABAKA) vs Hector Lombard (Yoshida Dojo) = Hector by first round KO. I dont think that Gono has the power to KO him and I dont see how else Gono could win.
Phil Baroni (Hammer House) vs Kazuo Misaki (Team GRABAKA) = Phil by KO R1
Denis Kang (American Top Team) vs Murilo Rua (Chute Boxe) = Ninja by KO R2
Murilo Bustamante (Brazilian Top Team) vs Amar Suloev (Red Devil Sport Club) Busta by Sub R1
Paulo Filho (Brazilian Top Team) vs Yoon Dong Sik (Takada Dojo) = I REALLY like Filho, hes gonna win a decision here. Maybe by GnP in the second.
Hayato Sakurai (Mach Dojo) vs Olaf Alfonso (Odo Fight Club) = Mach by KO R2
Tatsuya Kawajiri (T-Blood) vs Charles Bennett (Freelance) = Kawajiri by GnP late R1.
Mitsuhiro Ishida (T-BLOOD) vs Marcus Aurelio (American Top Team) = Ishida by decision.

I think that Kang is a touch over rated and we havent really had a chance to see Ninja at 185 yet cos he got raped by Filho.
Im still thinking back to the Matsui head stomping and hoping he still has it in him :)

24th May 2006, 07:34 AM
Yeah Kang vs Ninja is a hard one to guess as Ninja hasn't been at 185 long. Kang has decent striking, but tends to get tagged rather often. Ninja may well be able to TKO him, but then Kang is a big strong 185er too.......he maybe able to do some damage on the ground and as Ninja is getting up, if he is able to get him down.

Kang may be big and strong but dont forget that Ninja was a HW (although a bad one) and a LHW. Kangs strength is going to be nothing suprising for him i think.

True, but it didn't really help him counter Filho's strength it seemed. I expect Ninja will probably be stronger at the weight this time than last though as dropping all that weight the first time had to take a bit out of him....where as now he must be closer to his fight weight from the start.
There is a decent height difference (reach) in Kangs favour too right?

No they are both 180cm if the internet doesnt lie.
It will be interesting to see who bookies have as the fav. I figure it will be Ninja but there may be some money to made if it is...

Kang is big for a 185 thats for sure. what did he weight when Kaoklai knocked him out in the Seoul GP anybody know? thats something to note, that Kaoklai did take him out with punches. could say something about his chin?

No they are both 180cm if the internet doesnt lie.
Could be......only from my impression when being near them though....Ninja is smaller than me, and Kang seemed bigger than me. I'm 185.
Heck, no idea what he weighed then....was a hell of a counter though. lol

It's not like Ninja's this magnificent KO artist either. I do think that he should be able to beat Kang.
Eoh's a great wrestler and an explosive albeit very sloppy striker when he wants to be. The match up can either produce fireworks if he does decide to slug it out or end up as potentially the most boring fight on the card.

Makoto Takimoto (Yoshida Dojo) vs. Gegard Mousasi (Jurojin Gym) = Gegard.
Ryo Chonan (Team M.A.D.) vs. Joey Villasenor (Jackson's Submission Fighting) = If Villasenor doesnt knock out chonan early chonan will take it, so I pick Chonan.
Akihiro Gono (Team GRABAKA) vs Hector Lombard (Yoshida Dojo) = This is a tough one, Ive heard good things about Lombard, I think he'll submit Gono.
Phil Baroni (Hammer House) vs Kazuo Misaki (Team GRABAKA) = Another tough one, depends on Misaki's plan, if he decides to stand he can get KO'd at any second, but im picking Misaki by decision.
Denis Kang (American Top Team) vs Murilo Rua (Chute Boxe) = Kang by decision. Very hard fight, but Kang is good and has alot of confidence right now, still its hard to imagine Ninja losing two fights like these in a row.
Murilo Bustamante (Brazilian Top Team) vs Amar Suloev (Red Devil Sport Club) = hhhmm...I'll go with Busta by submission late in the fight.
Paulo Filho (Brazilian Top Team) vs Yoon Dong Sik (Takada Dojo) = Filho by decision, but Sik is getting more and more dangerous.
Hayato Sakurai (Mach Dojo) vs Olaf Alfonso (Odo Fight Club) = Mach by KO early.
Tatsuya Kawajiri (T-Blood) vs Charles Bennett (Freelance) = Kawajiri by brutal beatdown.
Mitsuhiro Ishida (T-BLOOD) vs Marcus Aurelio (American Top Team) = Tough fight, very important fight for Marcus, his confidence seems to have gotten up, ATT are doing good right now. Ill go with Aurelio by decision.
Jason Black (Militech Martial Arts) vs Eoh Won Jin = Dont really know this one, Black should win but its his first fight in Pride, Ill go with Jason anyways.

I like your picks, although I think that Chonan should be able to win. Joey gave some reasons as to why he fought like crap in his Japanese debut fight, but unlike Shirai Chonan should be able to strike back when it counts.
And I don't think Aurelio can sub Ishida either. It's hard to imagine Ishida winning, but if he tires Aurelio with his endless pressure he can take it.

Lombard is a scary *edit* judo guy, I expect him to beat Gono. I assumed he was a wrestler, I saw a short clip of him and he was slaughtering his opponents, although none of them are as good as gono.
Im picking the NYBA to knock out Misaki, Ninja to decision Kang and Suleov by KO in an upset, and Aurelio.

In the Kawajiri-Bennett fight i'm going with the favorite to take it via submission, even tho i have a strange feeling and i think that Bennett is gonna KTFO Kawajiri (just a feeling).
I think that Sik has improved a lot since his debut, his opponent is very good and the problem would be to finish him (Filho) because of his great ability to lay on somebody and control him there pretty easly. He's very powerfull and his jiu-jitsu is great, too. I think that the fight will go the distance and i'm not that sure about the winner but i'm picking Sik. I think that this time around the hard work will pay off. I see Sik scoring some punches and attempt some submissions. I'm not that confident that he can finish Filho but i do think that he can be more active/aggressive than him and score more significant points to get the decision.
I'd have picked Misaki to take this fight, but i learned to never go against Baroni...lol. No seriously, i think that nobody has ever had doubts about Baroni's power and hands...but i have to say he impressed me (Minowa, Chonan and Kondo like it was nothing).
This will be another great show and gp, Bushido is on top right now :)

wow, it's officially a trend to hate filho on this message board. seems like based one 1 fight which was his last fight against ninja.
i didn't find that fight boring at all...but that's just me...i predicted the fight would go just like that because ninja is one of the best at scrambling on the ground. filho's game is on the ground but ninja is a HARD guy to keep down which didn't make the fight the most exciting ever. the only filho fight i didn't care for was his fight against kondo. other than that, i've enjoyed all his fights and filho DOES gnp a lot and his gnp is very effective. he plays a tight game which is very effective but i'm sure to a lot is very 'boring' but for people to say he doesn't try to finish is nuts.

You might be biased though ;). In the Ninja fight he didn't try to finish the fight ONCE. Maybe you as a BJJ practicioner can appreciate his game, I find it boring as hell. MMA ain't sport JJ, of course it's impressive how Filho manhandles his opponents but that doesn't make it interesting at all.

I didn't realize until now that Olaf is on this card and none of you guys is giving him any chance. I love this guy, his bouts with Polakowski, especially the first one, are on my top list and he always comes to fight, what a character he is! He got caught against McCullough but still I'll root for him always as hard as I can. So I'm happy that word got finally to Japan too and they signed him, kinda on the same premise as Bennett I know that but still I gotta go with Olaf in his fight even when the wish may be the father of the thought here. :-)
Okay, here are my picks although I won't go into detail, just who will win imo:
Joey Villasenor vs Ryo Chonan
Makoto Takimoto vs Gegard Mousasi
Dennis Kang vs Murilo Ninja
Akihiro Gono vs Hector Lombard
Kazuo Misaki vs Phil Baroni
Murilo Bustamante vs Amar Suloev
Paulo Fihlo vs Yoon Dong Sik
Hayato Sakurai vs Olaf Alfonso
Mitsuhiro Ishida vs Marcus Aurelio
Jason Black vs Eoh Won Jin
Tatsuya Kawajiri vs Charles Bennett
I've chosen my picks here pretty fast and haven't given it too much thought. I'll think about it again before placing my bets these week after I've checked the lines. Maybe I'll post them here and maybe I'll even place a small bet on Olaf, depends on his line, call me crazy.

I was just stating my opinion, you made it sound like people critizise Filho just because it's the flavor of the month. I have reasons to not like him, whereas people that defend Filho usually study BJJ themselves. In that sense a Filho fight may be interesting because he is pretty much textbook on the ground (my uneducated assumption) but as much as I can appreciate his technique I am frustrated by him allways playing it safe - that's why I think he is boring.

wow, it's officially a trend to hate filho on this message board. seems like based one 1 fight which was his last fight against ninja.
Nope, aint based on just Ninja at all. Sorry, I just really do not like his style in anny way. He has my respect for his ground game, I'd just prefer not to have to pay mt cash to watch him fight. I pretty much feel the same way about Nino, but at least he has the decency to trade a bit and take some damage so I can cheer for his opponent to KHTFO.

okay so you haven't seen filho fights...
face it you were frustrated that ninja was neutralized at his new weight and you wanted to see his new muscles in action.
'im just stating my opinion' this and that...all the 'blanket' and 'put me to sleep' comments are just tired already. that's all i'm saying. there is boxing and k-1.

good for you...i enjoyed his fight even though 80% of the mma community didn't. he completely dominates and neutralizes his opponent which i can totally see why people would be turned off by it. but unlike arona, he's not content with sitting in his opponents guard the entire fight. filho plays a tight game and is big on balancing/shifting his weight to neutralize his opponents attacks BUT he still passes guard and takes mount to try and finish.
apparently he wasn't too successful or even close in his last match, big deal. he made the mistake of trying to make a dramatic finish with that gnp flurry. it wasn't effective but he still continued with it in hopes of the ref stopping the fight...in the end it backfired and he was pretty gassed for the rest of the match. it was a mistake and he knew it...he apologized to the announcers, the crowd, and to the camera...he knew it was dissapointing match.
but hey, he's only got 12 fights under his belt and he's still very young...Randy Couture didn't always have good gnp, but he learned.
anyways, everyone has their own cup of tea. i could watch my ADCC/Mundials/Pan Ams DVD's all day haha...it's not sport BJJ but i like to see strong BJJ fighters successful in MMA using their techniques and i think Filho will learn a lot from this GP alone. your favorite fighters would probably put me to sleep, but i won't whine about it every time i see their fights.
to each their own
