As the title might have informed you I've today received my yellow belt in jiu jitsu (No not on sherdog or some other forum!).

I don't know wether to call it traditional or Japanese jiu jitsu but most of it is arranged by my sensei's senseis Willem Boersma (he passed away this year at 83 I believe) and Mario den Edel.

I studied hard and an exam for a yellow belt of 5th kyu is nearly always a formality but I think I showed a lot of different techniques and some I didn't have to know already so the orange one might be close already :)...

Some pics are below, a friend and fellow student of mine who took the pics couldn't use the flash so I had to brighten them up afterwards but some pics still don't look good but hell...

Here the animated jury:

Maybe you are just too much of a sexy bitch in that gi. lol

More likely though, http://home.quicknet.nl/ is filtered for one reason or another.

I wish I was. I mean:

5th is yellow
4th is orange
3th is green
2nd is blue
1st is brown

then you get the First dan which is black
2nd dan (ads some stripe to your black belt)
and so on, My sensei has the fourth....

I am worried by Mellish's girlfriends triangle. Imagine the Mellish rage when he finds me in such a position with his girl :(. I guess I'd just have to argue that my shoulder tore ...

COOL PICS. Good Job. Being that you're a TMA stylist, do you guys spar?

Standup wise we spar indeed. Not very often but sometimes at the end of the lesson we get to try and combine the punches and kicks we learned and find out what type of combinations feel good. We spar without any protection to force us to keep the contact to a minimum and to learn how to take knuckles to the body.

On the ground we also do some rolling sometimes with a certain assignment for example that you have to undo your opponents belt. I found out that when you pull someone in half guard the gi pants are ideal to keep your opponent exactly there and you can even do that below the knee so you can work on your opponents midsection to untie his belt :). Somtimes its the task to turn your opponent on his back or control him without the use of submission holds and sometimes we get to use everything within our knowledge including small joint manipulation as in finger locks and pressure points :)

Dont you have 10 kyus before you get to black belt(idan)? Also it looks like your style is very similar to judo.

MZN

well I guess not, if yellow is the fifth one black is your first dan...

And on the judo bit: I guess it's just the pictures that make it look like somesort of crossbreed between Karate and judo but it is far more.

We use a lot of stuff that's not allowed in judo like wristlocks, fingerlocks, bend or straight armlocks and don't forget all the leglocks. Also the way you preform your techniques is different, in judo you get a hold of eachother and then start to work to a throw or something, in jiu jitsu you act upon an attack of all different sorts like grabs, holds, kicks and punches.

all and all quite a versatile style...

The ogoshi looks like it was executed well. Do you guys do alot of newaza(like BJJ style)?

It's relatively easy to toss someone who is perhaps 20 or 15 kilo's lighter than yourself (I'm about 95 or 210 lbs) and I guess it's just the picture that makes it look good :).

the ground fighting, not as often but sometimes yes. There also is a ground kata, the ne waza jitsu kata, I haven't studied that one yet but it will come around....
