Man thats hardcore!

I can't walk now, happens when you kick steel! Still a points a point, without the helmet it would have been a case of picking up the pieces of his jaw off the tatami!

Someone too video, but its all over the place, might put a pic up soon if they come out ok.

I do Nihon Kempo (sometimes known as Nippon Kempo) It has nothing to do with Kempo.
A fight consists of a 1 X 2 min round (3 mins for big events) and you must get 2 points by either head or body ( front area) strike. Downside is that if you counter often you have already lost a point.
we wear a helmet and body protector and boxing gloves.
Not everyone in Japan knows it, but it is popular. Last Chubu area contest we had just under 800 people in the whole event. (all ages)

My video didn't come out very well ( and in my opinion my fights sucked, i just scraped in) but I am trying to get some stills of it.

Yes nihon = japan & Kempo = Kempo BUT thats where the association with (the well known) kempo ends.
I managed to find this explaination in english on the web
"Nippon Kempo is a competitive combat sport founded in 1932 in Japan by Muneumi Sawayama. He was an undergraduate of Kansai University, Osaka at the time. Sawayama was born into a family that was descended from a Samurai family of the Nakaoka clan. Sawayama's martial arts training started with Judo at Junior High School. At Kansai University he practised both Karate and Judo. It was the simultaneous practice of various styles of martial arts that inspired him to realise the effectiveness of a combination of forms. Until he passed away on 27th September 1977, at the age of 72, he dedicated his life to developing the combination of techniques, which we know today as Nippon Kempo, and the compilation of the Nippon Kempo handbook.

Nippon Kempo is not a traditional Japanese martial art but a combat sport based on traditional Japanese martial arts. Traditional Japanese martial arts such as Karate were not devised as sports but killing arts. Their origins and nature mean they are not wholly suitable to be practiced as sports without corrupting their authenticity. Sawayama realising this, set about creating a safe realistic sport incorporating all the most practical and effective aspects and techniques of the traditional martial arts. Similar kicking techniques to Karate, Judo type throws, evasion and arm locks from Ju Jitsu and Aikido, can all be found at the core of Nippon Kempo training.

Nippon Kempo's uniqueness lies in its use of protective armour. This is fashioned after Samurai style armour and consists of a helmet, breastplate, padded vest, groin protector and gloves. Although protective armour is worn, in training the object is not excessive or uncontrolled contact. There is a distinct difference between putting on armour and brawl/flawing manically and Nippon Kempo sparring. The object of Nippon Kempo armoured contact sparring is to score points using a recognised Nippon Kempo technique. The emphasis is on winning by skill and technique not knockout or knockdown. The object of the armour is to allow realistic sparring without the risk of serious injury or disfigurement."

The vid that I had was terrible and all the stills were crap. I will get another hopefully better vid in a few weeks so till then....

I am a student at Kansai University where I practice Nihon Kempo everday. I agree with everything except for
"Nippon Kempo is not a traditional Japanese martial art but a combat sport based on traditional Japanese martial arts."
After Japan went through the Meiji period Japan found that martial arts were disapearing. "Jitsu" was turning into "do". People only practiced "the way" to perserve it from extinction. Before Japanese warriors did not practice one stlye of fighting. They practiced a series of "martial arts" that were all essential in survival during battle. Nihon Kempo is unarmed samurai fighting. The punchs are made to push through not brake(like karate), the kicks are made to lunge an opponent back, the reason why was so that even a warrior wearing armor would be effected by the various ways.Of course "kumi" and "nage waza" are also an important part of kempo. The punch and the kick were used to throw a samurai off balance enough to regain the sword and finish the battle. Kempo fighters wear armor is to similulate actual fighting that occured before Meiji.

As request, post pics if you have them mate, we'll build a shrine for ya :P

Art, Nope, still 2nd dan, should be 4th by now.
Injured ligaments in my wrist with a meaty hook that put sensei on the floor. That was in March LAST year and I'm still not 100%.
Training now with heaps of cardio & weights, hoping to make my comeback next month.
Damn those metal helmets!
