View Full Version : Some early brainstorming about the final eliminations

maybe a bit early, but I wanted to exchange some thoughts about the final eliminations later this year.

we all know how the system works in the finals, and that's pretty fair. The only influence K-1 can do, is the early tournaments and the matchups in the final eliminations. With that, they can plan the final 8 ahead. Well at least they can try to, an incidental surprise as we have seen with Ignashov, that can always happen.

So, first of all, we already know that the 8 finalists of last year join in, and until now we have the qualifiers from the Grand Prixs of this year: Choi, Schilt and Feitosa. One question, because I'm not sure? Is Bonjasky defending his title again, whatever the result may be in the final eliminations (with other words: will that be a sort of superfight again?).

Another question, who will K-1 select this year themselves. They can select two fighters. One of them will be Ignashov imo. It looks like he has unending credit with K-1, no matter how inconsistent he is. He just has a large bandwagon and marketing value, he's hard to ignore. Who will the other be? My guess is Le Banner personally, but I'm not sure. The spot can be given to a lot of other fighters, but I have no idea who it would be. Your thoughts please. Oh wait, when I'm typing, I just know it: it has to be Leko ofcourse!

At last, the million dollar questions. Who wants K-1 in the finals? And who they DON'T want in, for sure.

Some considerations: they definately want a japanese homeboy in. No need to explain here, I think. Musashi would be fed to an easier opponent. One he can beat anyway. Another one: Choi should be in the tournament, for the freak-reason, but also for commercial reasons. Korea is a major market and it looks logical that choi should have an opponent he could beat. On the other hand, if Choi is in for certain, that would cost another fighter his place, so my guess is they'll match him up with someone of the same caliber, and if Choi would lose, then K-1 will still have someone who can replace him with the same freak amount and marketability. Don't freak out, but I fear Bob Sapp has a decent chance to win the K-1 Japan and take a spot. Sapp vs Choi, another freakshow has born and whatever the result is, I'm pretty sure K-1 is happy with the outcome.

Then another important fact. Remy is in. Aerts is in. Hoost is in. Schilt is in. So those are 4 dutchmen. If we assume that no one of these men has any injury, they'll certainly try for one more year (aerts/hoost). Schilt is determined to advance to the finals and Hoost wants revenge. Aerts already said in an interview that he wants to try it once more if he feels oke.

We all know that the dutch domination in K-1 has been huge, already since the beginning. I can't imagine that they let it come so far that they'll have 4 dutchmen in the finals. That means, that one of them either get screwed, or, more likely, two of them would be paired up in the eliminations. My guess is that Schilt will be matched with Hoost (last time it was ended in a draw, so would be a pretty sweet matchup), OR, which doesn't seem impossible, a Hoost vs Aerts matchup!

Who doesn't want to see this! The two biggest legends in K-1, matched up against eachother! Personally I think it is a considerable thought, because both carreers are pretty much going to an end, and the possibility of fighting each other is getting slimmer with time going by. So it could be possible that K-1 is getting this last chance to match them. And they will still have a legend in the finals. And ofcourse, they have met eachother 4 times, and it stands 2-2 as far as I know. Could it get any better?

These are my most important things I've been thinking about, I haven't thought of any other matchup. So I'm pretty curious about your thoughts an curious about your comments on my statements here.

They always want big names in the finals and I don't think they will change that pattern right now. With the big names I mean Aerts, Sefo, Hoost, JLB. I'm pretty sure that last one will get a wild card (based on his name, fan base, performances and his fight style).
There are however a bunch of other fighters that should be selected for the eliminations. Graham deserves a shot I think, Ignashov is cool too but he hasn't shown much during the last year. Leko would be cool too, but I think it would be too early to throw him in the eliminations right away, although he defineltely deserves his place there. They should get rid of the freaks and give these fighters a shot ... but there is also the commercial aspect ...

After their Paris brawl I'm quite certain that either Le Banner or Abidi or both will get an elimination fight wether they earn it or not.

I doubt Ignashov will make it to the eliminations.

He has lost his last three fights not to his performance but to his injury and he has just come out of surgery. If he fights anytime in the next few months he could risk getting the injury back.

I hope Leko gets a shot at the eliminations, then if he and Schilt both come back to K1 it would mean that the quality of this years GP would be raised considerably.

Whether Remy is fighting for a spot or not this year is unclear so far.

As for who they want in, it`ll be between Iggy, Abidi, JLB and Akebono I think. Akebono fighting Choi in the Inter. GP as a superfight means they are giving him no further chance to qualify for it.......meaning perhaps they'll give him a spot?

Iggy, if his knee is good would no doubt do very well and I`d love to see him there.

LeBanner is always a sure thing, as is Abidi with the crowd getting behind him. Abidi's figures for sale on the second hand market have near doubled in value since his last fight with Lebanner, and possible merchandise sales is something they will perhaps consider.

They get to chose two people, but that also assumes no one will be, or get injured between events. TITANS is in August this year and Kaoklai may well fight there again......him getting KTFO would give K-1 the excuse to boot him for another fighter, as Semmy stubbing his toe would for him.

Semmy for me is the one they really don`t want to advance. In fact, I`d not be surprised to see Choi vs Semmy as Sem hasn`t been the best when attacked by tall guys that can pressure him.

Leko needs to do a LOT more than beat one guy K-1 has ignored to get back in. I see no way he would make it to the 2005 GP other than an unlikely superfight.

Four Dutchmen in the GP isn`t likely IMO. Again, I hope not, but I`d not be overly surprised to see Ernesto vs Remy in the Eliminations.

Sapp being in changes things slightly. Will they now have a Sapp vs Choi Eliminations fight, or try to work that one into the GP?

Will they now try and work a second Japanese fighter into the Eliminations?

Will they call Iggy in to take out Semmy, or give the job to LeBanner, or possibly Abidi?

Will Semmy chose to go bowling again?

I really cant believe that was their excuse.

A Hoost vs Aerts first Eliminations match up would be so cool, but so wrong at the same time.

Sapp or Choi definately will be in finals, one of them will get easy ride..
Also Remy will get some "can", Musashi also..

K1 should those two spots give to Leko and JLB.

LeBanner has already qualified by defeating Abidi in their "special qualifying" super fight according to the K-1 Japan review.

I believe that became a "special qualifier" after it finished. lol

Me too. They should give Cyril a superfight or two and if he does well they should give him the remaining spot. Ignashov has undergone surgery if I'm correct and he'll be out of the running for this years GP spot anyhow, and If Leko comes back it will probably be at a time that all of the qualifying has concluded. So I say give it to Cyril. He showed crazy heart against LeBanner (and many of his other fights) so give it to the guy.

Well there are a bunch of guys who want to be in the eliminations ... I guess we'll have to wait and see what the K-1 will do. Maybe they'll allow Abidi in maybe someone else.
One thing I don't believe and that is that they will allow Akebono in the eliminations. He could be fighting Choi if they really wanted to have a Korean in the Final, but that fight will happen in Hawai now.
Another thing is Hoost. He should be auto selected, but it is not sure if he will compete. If he does not, a new spot will be open.
Hoost said he was having problems with injuries at the moment and that THAT was the issue wether he would be participating in the eliminations or not. I personally think he will compete in the eliminations.

Aren't last year finalists allowed to defend their spot against someone who wasn't in?
