View Full Version : Interesting fact on Andy Hug

I was watching his memorial doco last night and they were saying when he first came to K-1 they were all wondering why it seemed he couldn`t take a punch as well as the other fighters, and seemed to have a glass jaw.
They took him to a dentist to find out why and the dentist noted all of Andy`s molars were either missing, or rotten. So, he could only clench his jaw with his front teeth.
They made him up a special new mouth piece just before the 96 GP, and the rest is history.......

interesting indeed, any reason why his teeth were rotten and missing?

Interesting...I allways thought the Swiss had good medical insurance.
I wonder how this special mouthpiece was designed. Just added plastic where the molars should have been?

Remember though, Andy came from a broken home, so I am not too sure what his medical care would have been like. They didn`t go into the reason for them being like they were though.
The mouth piece they didn`t really "show" but the detist was holding it while talking and it looked like they had filled in the missing teeth area with plastic and molded it into one piece, so it was pretty big.

This thread made me think, Andy was never really knocked out cold by a punch. Bernardo laid a beating on him a couple times, but he never went down in the first fight and he got right back up in the second, albeit pretty groggily.

Good call on the Filho fight, he wasn't on his feet even after the ten count finished. He was never really knocked out against Pat though, just stopped in one of the worst ref stoppages in K-1 history.

Andy was a Warrior, and When he won, he won.
When he lost he lost. At least he left it all in the ring
(So to speak). He also had big losses to Bernardo,
Sefo and Aerts.
yea, the reffing in the first Patrick Smith fight was poor.
The referree should have stepped in after the first
"Knockdown" to separated the two fighters.
Andy popped up so fast, the ref could not react
fast enough to get in there, while Smith of course
reacted immidiately by knocking Andy down again.
Crazy stuff. Andy got revenge eventually though :-)
That Filho fight was surprising. I think that it was anticipated
Andy would get revenge; as Filho had beat him in Knockdown
Rules at the Kyokushin World tournaemnt before Andy left
Kyokushin - Filho was a relative unknown at the time. Since
it was under K-1 kickboxing rules, and (I belive) Filho's
entrance into the world of Kickboxing competition, and Andy
had years of experience at "Glove fighting" by then, it would
make sense Andy would have the edge in this "re-match".
Instead, brutal KO by a punch of all things from Filho.

when cyril abidi had dental surgery, he lost his chin. remember when he would take those big BIG shots and keep firing. may be he should have gone to andy's dentist.

BTW, Felix, do you know when Abidi had his surgery? I remember thinking he had taken some HUGE hits without even kissing cavas until Sefo in 2000.

His surgery was before his fight with Andrew Thomson in 2001. I remember the report saying that there was some concern about it (something about his molars or wisdom teeth i think).
Andrew rocked him pretty bad but didnt drop him. The one punch got him at the back part of the jaw which I would assume was the problem area. He seemed weak on his feet after that. Still... lots of heart from Cyril. Gave Andrew hell initially.
Good thing he didnt have to face Ignashov in te semis. Iggy was out to kill that night.

Yes, you have me there. I have to just really think through
whoever his poor battered opponent from block B will be.
Then I will post my prediction. I better hurry! :-)
As far as Andy Hug, I have the training tape he did with Kakuda
and it is Dynamite! They go through 10 of Andy’s favorite combinations.
Very nice. I cannot do all of them due to Andy’s incredible flexibility -
but one thing I liked about them was that they took distancing into
account really well. and, there is a great focus on left middle round
kicks, especially to target the liver. After practicing these combos a great
deal, padholders started to think I was left handed, as my left kick had
gotten stronger then my right kick, and I am right handed! good stuff.

Since were on the subject of teeth, does having lots of fillings in molars affect absorption of shock? Would it make your chin better?

don't know for sure zanzoken. i think the difference would be minimal. considering how many factors affect the resistance to knockouts, neck, skull, age, eyesight, experience, jaw, previous damage, even cardio; i think it is impossible to not only do a study but also form a theory.
