Pure Judo Akiyama wouldnt want to try his first full contact stand up fight against Cyril Abidi of all people...

Interesting matchup. If he cant get Cyril to the canvas where his skills are... he'll eat a high kick... or some kind of kick and that will be it.

He's not old-school judo exactly. Besides, Quinton Jackson's first full contact stand up fight was against Cyril Abidi. It's a valid question. I'm assuming MMA, but it's just assumptions.

Rumours were Abidi would be fighting MMA, so I`ll assume this is a MMA fight. Abidi is not the biggest HW in the world, so I see this as a rather exciting fight for both actually.

Akiyama should be a little easier to handle for Abidi than Frye.

I also think it will be an interesting match. Cyril don't do ground fights much and he prefers standing, but he has a little Judo background (he was doing some when he was younger).

I don't know much about Akiyama besides what is said on K-1 official website.

I think MMA rules would help his brawler style, but i think as any k1 fighter has to do in MMA, he must train more on groundwork.

He fought Don Frye at Inoki Bom Ba Ye in 2001. He actually survived to the 2nd round, and they were on the ground for the most of that fight. He was PISSED with himself for losing (by rear-naked choke.)

I think thats true. Frye is a tough old sob at the best of times, and that was before he got most of his bad injuries.

Akiyama is an olympic level joduka....thats about all I know about him. You`d have to assume his stand up isn`t the best so he`ll be looking to take it down fast. Abidi will be physically stronger though.....hang on...here it is "Akiyama stands 179cm and weighs in at 85kg"

One thought....he is famous here for wearing a colourful gi, so he "may" wear one to the ring.

Abidi will have the standup edge (obviously) and the physical edge (190cm and around 100kg), but this guy must be tough if hes olympic level. Abidi must keep it standing!

One thing.....85kg maybe fighting weight, I`m not sure. If it is though he may walk around up to 10kg heavier.

Height advantage means huge reach advantage though. Leg kicks to virgin legs from outside of range :-)
