View Full Version : **Spoiler** Rampages Corner
( o Y o )

I thought it was their duty to protect their fighter.
Watching the fight about 90 seconds in Rampage grabs his chest after a knee....from their things go down and about 2 minutes later while being hit he yells clearly to his corner "its broken" to which we hear "you gotta fucking fight man, pull your head out"
The next flurry we have Rampage clearly trying to protect his ribs from the knees rather than his head and we can hear more abuse being screamed at him. They get a break and he calls to his corner that his ribs are broken, and he was right near his corner. We hear more screaming from them followed by "unload that fucking right...you are there to fight god dammit" or something similar.
After it ends and Rampage has clearly given up....he lays on the ground and his team doesn`t come to see if he is OK. In fact, I believe one of the other team members are the first to check him out. Next scene is Oyama abusing shit out of him again, while he is nursing a swelling chest and having trouble breathing.
Well, I don`t know about you guys bu with a team like that in my corner I`m not sure I`d be confident they would be doing the right thing by me. I`ve been up close to a couple of teams before and never seen (heard) such disreguard for their own fighters health before.
Perhaps rampage has put Oyama through a bit of a rollercoaster ride with his changes and fasts and shit before, but still.....
Or perhaps it is after midnight, I`m tired, and seeing too much in things. But I think Oyama`s team came off as pretty arrogant tonight.

They should have thrown the towel if they knew he was hurt. And on a sidenote, Oyama gives shitty advice when he`s cornering.

thats quite some harsh points there...got to watch it first, but sounds like they handled Quinton like a quitter, which is a goddamn shame.
no matter what happens, a team 'should' always support its fighter in public i think

They should have thrown in the towel. That's their job. I know emotions are high, but the bottom line is to protect your fighter.
I'm begining to wonder if they even have a towel in Rampage's corner. After the knees he took in the first Silva fight, it's easy to see a pattern. Maybe it's part of that macho - don't stop the fight unless I'm dead - thing. I can't figure it out.
Oyama missed the boat on this one.
Next scene is Oyama abusing shit out of him again, while he is nursing a swelling chest and having trouble breathing.
I'm starting to think Rampage should join CB. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

Rampage and Heath Herring both should join Team Quest and breath fresh air into that team.

the right bodypunch Shogun got in on Quintons left side with 5.43 to go when he closed in on Jackson in his corner was the killer, imagine how this must have hurt on broken ribs, i think you can even hear Rampage scream of pain!! Hope he recovers well

Maybe he should switch team, but I remember him saying Oyama is like a father to him.

first about fightin strategy - rampage haven't got any defense from kness-from-the-clinch, which cost him against silva, and now against shogun, which is rather weird considering his physical srtength and abilities...
and on the subject - it made me sad watching this heavily beaten fighter just laying on the floor in the pain, alone

im watching the fight now. and after he "whipsers" to his corner, you hear them say
"DAMMIT don't tell me whats wrong man"
fark that, if my fighter just said "my ribs are broken" isnt the right thing to do throw the towel in..
like.. jeeze, maybe he should leave oyama.. :S

Man that story makes me mad. I can't believe they would hang him out to dry like that. I can understand them not realizing his pain initially, but if he continuosly looks to them to intervien on his behalf anything that they say outside of we got to stop the fight is selfish and uncaring. Matter of fact they should have known that something was wrong when he looked for help the first time because I cannot recall ever seeing him do that before.
His corner was acting like this is the last fight of his career and he has to win it.

I couldn't agree with you more oYo.
Those thoughts were going exactly through my mind as I watched the fight. Why don't they throw in the towel?
But most of all, as you said, why didn't they come into the ring at once as the ref stopped the fight? Wasn't that what a team is supposed to do for you? I remember when Enson got subbed by Nog, his teammates practically killed the referee for being in their way, same went with Ninja getting KO'ed by Kharitonov (two most fresh examples that come to mind). What coach Oyama and company did that night was a DISGRACE. Quinton is such a wonderful guy (especially now), it felt as if they were abusing him.
Furthermore, it is clearly obvious that they didn't do the proper training against Muy Thai clinch/ knees, 'Page looked hopeless.
It feels that ChuteBoxe had Quinton's number figured and Oyama didn't do a damn thing about his boy.

couldnt agree more. god damn, what a world of good it would do for them all. rampage and heath would both get the discipline that all fighters need from randy, who is probably one of if not THE most disciplined fighters out there (randy. only fedor might have more discipline imo), while they would offer (and get) plenty of great sparring from hendo and couture, two of the best (both top 10 imho) int he world.

That's very funny what I read here, cuz I didn't notice it at all. I saw him wave to his corner that something was completely wrong but knowing what I know now made those remarks from his corner really brute.
On the knees in the clinch: I think Rampage has too much boxing habits in his system, he ducks a punch but does that bending over forward, presenting a nice clinch target for shogun...

Boobs, I totally agree....
Thats a shame imo to dont protect his fighter...
He was out of the fight, even before he broke his ribs, I dont know what happen to Quinton, its like he lost his fighting spirit, he isnt the same since his revenge match vs Wandy.
BTW they should have throw the towel he tooks like 10 knees and 3 kicks to the head in the last 30 seconds...that was the 30 seconds that shouldnt happened.

Rampage should have a long talk with his Team - this whole thing is actually unbelieavble, as i saw it Oyama treated him like a wastebag!!
On one side, what a lot of people didnt seem to realize is: props for Rampage for hangin in there so long
He should definitly work on his MT clinch...He wont learn that from a 'US Kickboxer'

man, i felt so bad for rampage in that fight. shogun did impress me because his striking looked really good and on point...it would of went a lot different if jackson didn't get injured but shogun still looked good.
but yeah, jackson should go train w/ another team. he's great now but i think he'd improve by a lot by training w/ some other guys. his corner guys that night were just ridiculous and selfish. i hope rampage switches teams and comes back better than ever...i'd like to see a rematch where he beats the hell out of shogun ha.

I'm not saying it was right on Oyama's part but NOBODY knows Rampage's body better then he does...if his ribs were broken which I'm guessing they were he shouldve dropped to the ground right away and tapped out himself.
I'm sure when things are going that fast and intense that Oyama just wanted his fighter to pull it out since he had such a bad fight with Ninja. In a fight like this, NOBODY is 100% in control of their state of mind cause they have to think quick.
But I do agree that Rampage should go train elsewhere if he wants to improve and be a top 3 fighter again.

Sakakibara seems to agree, it should have been stopped though as the ref clearly hadn`t noticed it was the job of his second to throw the towel in.

If you see your fighter getting his ass handed to him by another fighter, it's your responsibility as a trainer/manager/corner man to stop the fight so your guy doesn;t get hurt, he can always come back and fight another day.
If the ref didn't see what was happening then maybe the ref should not be a referee in any more.... isn't the safety of the fighter a ref's main concern.

Im a big Quinton fan but Rampage wasn't KO'd. The ref stopped it cause he saw Jackson not doing anything. If you look closely you see Quinton on the ground and hes pointing at his ribs at the end of the fight.
That being said if he was still conscious and his ribs were broken, shouldn't Rampage have dropped to the ground and tapped out the second he knew something was wrong?
I'm not arguing it wasn't all Oyama's fault. But Rampage knows his body best and he should have tapped himself and he should take some of the blame as well.
Its like someone getting the armbar put on them and not tapping expecting there corner to throw in the towel. Nobody knows if the armbar is locked in for sure except for the fighters.
I deffinitely think Rampage should train elsewhere but I dont see why just Oyama and the Ref are getting all the heat.

remember igor/rampage? the second that igor complained about his ribs, the fight was waved off. his cornermen ran to see how he was. that's how it should be imo, so you're not wrong, even if it is after midnight.

Prefightinterview with Quinton Jackson - heres what Quinton said about giving up against Mauricio Rua:
"I just refuse to lay down. If he’s going to beat me, he’s going to have to knock me out, submit me or make the referee pull him off of me. I’m not going to give up."

"Wow, this is a real sore subject for me right now so I will try not to rant too much.
I haven’t spoken with Quinton since he fought this past weekend. I have many concerns at this point, in regard to Quinton and what happened with his coach and his corner during his recent fight. Quinton was injured in the first minutes of the fight and his corner did not act in his best interest. It is always your corners duty to put the fighters safety first regardless of the situation. Quinton could have sustained a life threatening injury due to the negligence of his corner.
Do I seem pissed? Yes, Quinton is a great guy and has a tremendous amount of heart when it comes to fighting and life in general. When is it ever in a fighter’s best interest, if he is injured and it is an injury that could bring about career altering results, or life threatening situations to keep him fighting? It is of the utmost importance, that your corner at all cost, be attentive to the fighters health and well-being.
Quinton has been with Pride for what, about 3 years now (give, or take) and the fighters around him have continued to grow and evolve with their training. For some reason Quinton has leveled out and not progressed. Is this because he can’t? Absolutely not! He needs to look at other options for coaching. I am not suggesting he get rid of his coaches all together, just suggesting he be open to other training options. I believe and this is my belief only that his coaches keep him from this out of fear of losing him to others. Once again is this in the best interest of the fighter?
Many blame Quinton’s new way of living on his lack-luster performances, but I find this only to be a very minute if any, part of the problem. Has it taken some of Quinton’s edge away when it comes to his heart and his desire to win? I think not, after witnessing his desire for the win and the heart he displayed during this last fight. Bottom line, Quinton has got to change some of his training up, or change careers.
When Quinton last fought Wandy, he took a multitude of knees and this was the same case with Shogun. If I were Quinton’s coach, after the fight with Wandy, we would have trained defense and counters for those knees everyday until it was of nothing less then his basic natural instinct to defend those knees. Oh well, I could go on for the rest of the day about all of the things that I find to be inadequacies of his training coaches. Quinton will be back, cause you can’t keep a man with that kind of heart and drive, down for long."
----
"However, Bas has offered to help Quinton out on many occasions. Quinton lives semi close to Bas and Bas, would make the time for Quinton. I think his trainers are afraid to let him branch out. It is just my opinion, but all signs clearly point to this.
We love Quinton and want to see him succeed to the top! He is a great guy and an unbelievably marketable fighter. It is just a shame what has been happening to him."

That is correct, src is sherdog. Two separate posts on the subject.
Furthermore I also received correspondance from a source(respectable) that I wouldn't like to reveal who off the record stated that he believes(contrary to my opinion) that this new tendency, i.e. Mir's broken arm, and now Quinton is definitely having a malefic effect on MMA, that it is causing it to become more and more like boxing. That it is the fighters responsibility to verbally submit or tap has he(the fighter) not have the ability to continue fighting. That it is in intent transfering the responsibility to stop the fight to someone else and thus having them to give up for you, which is in itself inherently irresponsible. And that it is this attitude that is taking over the sport which we should worry about, because quitting does NOT make you an inferior fighter.
