K1 Hackney Empire Preview

Last Man Standing Hackney Empire 14th November 2004

The world of full contact has seen major changes in recent years, not least with the advent of the MMA scene, so slickly packaged and marketed by the UFC in the States, but for the stand-up purists the new force capturing the world's imagination is the spectacular K1 format. Like the UFC fighters, K1's competitors are fast becoming huge stars, acknowledged as the most dynamic and explosive full contact fighters on the planet, as emphasised by the huge ratings the K1 generates for British Eurosport.

Pioneering the format in the UK is Paul Hennessy's 'Showsport International', ensuring that the K1 is at the forefront of full contact competition in this country with his hugely successful Heavyweight and Middleweight UK elimination tournaments. Paul's efforts have ensured that the Midlands have become a K1 hotbed but now, in unison with veteran 10K promoter Joe Long, Paul is bringing the UK K1 format to the newly refurbished Hackney Empire in London, for what promises to be the biggest and best K1 yet, with a full supporting card of tough Muay Thai action.

Some of the biggest names in the heavyweight division are on the card, with Gary 'Smiler' Turner topping the bill against the French champion Gregory Tony. This is a fight where the often under-rated Turner can cement his reputation as Tony dominated British star Pele Reid on the recent 'Pain and Glory' spectacular, even out boxing him on the way to a decisive points victory. Turner showed his grit and determination in a recent hard -fought draw with the highly rated Canadian Mike McDonald and victory against Tony, where Reid failed, would surely rank Gary as Britain's number one. He'll have to be at his absolute best, however, as Tony seemed a complete fighter in his taming of Reid." For the complete story, check here:

From MAN Magazine:

"November 14th., Gary Turner will face Jerrel Venetiaan from The Netherlands instead of Tony Gregory (France). Promoter Paul Henessy decided at the last moment to change this match. Both his management and coach are very confident that Gary will do a great job."

Turner drew with Mcdonald so you have to respect that, but i like Ventetian in this one. He seems like a guy who never lived up to his potential though.

Venetiaan vs Gary is quite a tough match up for both I think. A nice fight I`m sure it`ll be.

Hope someone that gets this live can pbp it for us poor bastards that can`t see it.

Venetiaan is a tough customer. Never been KOed. His only losses in stand-up have happened within the last year against Peter Aerts, Sergei Gur and Lloyd van Dams. Xhavit gave him hell in Basel...

Should be good.

Although I'm a big fan of smiler cuz he posts on sherdog and I like what he's doing and stuff, I think that Venetiaan is a way more skilled fighter. His only problem is that somehow he never shows what he is capable of. He is too comfortable with fighting backwards in such a manner that it doesn't win him the fight. He needs some dynamite up his backside like Ole Laursen had against el Amrani :).

Jerrel has VERY few wins by KO funny enough (out of 40+ fights). If you watch him fight he has more than what it takes to get more KOs... but i dont think he pushes himself enough to get the KO even though he is technically brilliant. Fights just like Hoost... but isnt a great finisher.

I still want to find out what the hell Venetiaan's ENTRANCE MUSIC is. I love that stuff. That evil foreign heavy metal with screaming he used in SWitzerland. Anyone?

Jerrel is indeed a fantastic fighter, who should pose major difficulties to Turner, who is just now turning really a pro fighter with complete training. Still, Gur kinda of exposed Venetiaan weakness, that when a fighter isn't willing to follow his rithym, he can push Jerrel and he sometimes doesn't know what to do. Turner already stated that he's very confident and very hungry, to show others what he can do and what level he is aiming to achieve in his career, so I'm going with him in this one!

Anyway ( o Y o ), I'm not really sure if this will be broadcasted at all, even if only in UK - I'm pretty sure it won't appear in Eurosport, since it's a small, local event... Unless someone takes a portable pc to the site, it'll be very difficult to have a pbp, I guess... :(

Jerrel I have seen a couple of time, and he always appears ready. Smiler, I am embarrassed to sy, I have only seen in small clips here and there. I just hope I can find this fight somewhere afterwards.

Best of luck to both.

I think Smiler is a nice guy and everything but I didnt like the way he fought against Bjorn Bregy in Basel. Very disruptive... tripping him at almost every opportunity.

It's a legit technique. Smiler was new to the game and was not going to get any respect from Bregy. Bregy is a big guy and getting swept to the floor and having to get up again takes energy out of you. In addition, it's a way for Smiler to get inside Bregy's head. Sooner or later he starts thinking he doesn't wanna get tripped again because it wears on you and looks kinda amateurish to keep falling on your behind. Gets inside your head and puts hesitation into your kicks. Of course it is disruptive, but I'm sure that was partly the whole point behind it. That he got swept often is simply because he presented the opportunity so many times.

I don't think Smiler will mind too much but I nicked this from axkickboxing.com

Here's what he had to say about the fight.

"We stuck to our game plan, and the new changes resultant from only 8 days work with my new trainer Henk really came through! It combined lovely with the work that my boxing coach Steve Fox has done with my hands, and Andre Daltrey with my kicks, to make the win...well...comfortable! I didn't feel threatened at any time...

And that includes the two hooks that Jerrel caught me with. One thing we are yet to correct with all my new movements and stuff is my guard while attacking, and we all know Jerrel is a counter puncher and counter kicker! He waits for you to attack - and bam! But unfortunately for Jerrel I have an incredibly tough head and body, so although I felt those hooks, they weren't a worry. (However, my guard will be worked no end now - if I was fighting Peter Aerts or Jerome Lebanner I'd have been punched out into the crowd!!

In a way its a shame that Jerrel broke the toes, as it prevented him from throwing the right low kick as a counter for my combinations...and we'd built a knockout finish for when he did that! But he didn't...so was Jerrel therefore fortunate that his toes were broken? He actually should have had a couple of 8 counts for walking away and not fighting...but I'm not splitting hairs! Injuries in the ring happen...just have to be dealt with!

Jerrel is a lovely guy and a great fighter. It was an honour to fight him, as it always feels better when your opponent is a top fella! Someone on one of the forums said he was arrogant, but I saw none of that, and I don't think anyone who has met him over here would say that either. He's a nice, warm and intelligent person, and deserves respect from us all. "

but now the real probleme is coming The Snake Badr Hari from Chakuriki/Pancration

Missy

LOL! Well I'm sure Badr will present different challenges to Gary, leaner, quicker, more aggressive etc but considering that many people didn't think he had the skills to beat Jerrel you can never count out the underdog.

Cool, Gary won. Let's see how he does against Hari, who everyone on sherdog claims is the second coming of Peter Aerts. Can't really comment on that since I've seen only a very small amount of him in the ring.
