Jacare's two cents (http://www.graciemag.com/news/144/ARTICLE/10763/2008-06-05.html):

"SUre I have predictions. I know the middleweight category is a tough one full of tough guys, but I'm betting on the guy who got 50 submissions in 50 fights at brown belt: I bet on Kron Gracie," says Ronaldo, between training sessions in Los Angeles, where he's also battling to get his visa. "At medium heavyweight, things will be even tougher. It'll be between Andre Galvao and Braulio, since Barral's not fighting."

And the absolute? "It'll go to Xande. I believe in Roger a lot and he has everything he needs to be champion, of course. But there will be a guy from the Amazon in his way. Xande will be there," he says in provocation, remembering the lightweights. "I heard a load of tough Japanese fighters in the lower weight groups will be coming. These Japanese guys are wily. But in truth I think Cobrinha will take the featherweight again. And I'll be there to see it up close.

Want to check the brackets? Go here (http://www.ibjjf.org/cgi-bin/montachaves.asp)

It'll bring up something like this (http://www.ibjjf.org/cgi-bin/ChavesComp.asp?nome_do_arquivo=_0502105.txt&Linha=36&Faixa=Black&Peso=Medio&Idade=Adulto&Sexo=Masculino&ChaveAtu=1&QtdPaginas=2). Which is pretty cool, as I just found out Mike Fowler will be competing.

Alternatively, you can search by name here (http://www.bjjnow.com/2008mundials/2008Mundials.htm).

And for the "upset."

Moraes taps Kron. (http://www.graciemag.com/news/144/ARTICLE/10808/2008-06-08.html)

In other news:

Kyra Gracie took the women's brown and black belt absolute division. She had two choke wins and a points win, and in the finals, which were supposed to be today, her teammate showed respect in handing the title to her.

Absolute division (http://www.graciemag.com/news/144/ARTICLE/10797/2008-06-07.html) coverage (quarterfinals):

Roger Gracie vs Alexandre Souza

Roger got the submission in his first two fights, both chokes. The first victim was Paul Halme, who had made it past Jory Malone. The second to get in his way was Tiago Pereira, who beat Alexandre Pereira in the first round.

Current European absolute champion Alexandre Souza had Antonio Passos as his first adversary and came out on top. In the round of eight, he overcame by a 12 to 0 drubbing Murilo Santana.

André Galvão vs Rafael Lovato Jr.

Wrapped up in the Pan-American absolute title, Andre Galvao did well in the first two rounds. To fall in his wake were Martin Suarez and Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu.

American Rafael Lovato Jr had to work hard to put away Rubens Charles Cobrinha in his first fight. Nearly 50kg heavier than the Brazilian from Alliance, Lovato guaranteed his trip to the next round in the last second. In the round of eight, he beat Marcel Fortuna.

Xande Ribeiro vs Antonio Braga Neto

Wanting to recover the title he won last year, Xande Ribeiro got the submission in his first two fights. The first to be eliminated was Raul Castillo. The second was Hugo Carrione's turn to leave the contest.

Sengoku fighter Antonio Braga Neto debuted beating Jose Junior, and then made it past Eduardo Telles with a score of 6 to 2.

Gabriel Vella vs Flavio Cachorrinho

Vella began his trajectory in the absolute beating Daniel Aguiar. In the round of eight, Rodrigo Cavaca was not up to speed with the Alliance black belt.

Younger brother of Ricardo Cachorrao, Flavio Cachorrinho is in the quarter final after beating James Nielsen and Eduardo Santoro.

Semifinals: (http://www.graciemag.com/news/144/ARTICLE/10800/2008-06-07.html)

Roger vs André Galvão; Xande vs Vella

The absolute black belt dispute is one that to give spectators chills, in the California State University Long Beach gymnasium. The semifinals have just been defined.

Current champion Roger Gracie will try to remain strong in the fight for his second against Andre Galvao. The Gracie submitted Alexandre Souza with a choke from the mount, while Galvao submitted Rafael Lovato Jr with a choke from the back.

On the other side of the bracket, Xande Ribeiro submitted Antonio Braga Neto with a forearm choke from the mount, while Gabriel Vella guaranteed his spot among the four best with a judges’ decision after a 1 to 1 draw against Flavio Cachorrinho.

The semifinals will take place momentarily and the final is set from tomorrow, along with the other black belt decisions.

Stay tuned to GRACIEMAG.com and we will bring you the semifinal results shortly.

And the final will be: (http://www.graciemag.com/news/144/ARTICLE/10804/2008-06-07.html)

Roger vs Xande final
Roger beats Galvao, Xande defeats Vella and rivals repeat 2006 absolute decision

A sensational deja vu will take over the California State University gymnasium tomorrow, when the absolute black belt final will be held. Main rivals since Ronaldo Jacare left the World title dispute to dedicate himself to MMA, Roger Gracie and Xande Ribeiro qualified for the grand decision with authority. The two are the last two champions of the absolute category, as Xande won gold in 2006, beating Gracie himself in an epic final, and Roger is the current champion, having beaten Romulo Barral in the fight of gold in 2007.

In the last step before the final, Roger Gracie was unable to submit Andre Galvao, however, he eliminated the Brasa black belt by a score of 12 to 0. The points were obtained with a takedown (2), a guard pass (3), a mount (4) and taking the back (4).

Now, Xande also won in style. He scored 9 to 2 on Gabriel Vella with a takedown (2), a guard pass (3) and a mount.

Glad Tussa's still in. He's probably my favorite person to roll with. Too bad he lives in New Mexico and I'm in Seattle.
