Sokoudjou def. Kazuhiro Nakamura - TKO R1
Thoughts?
What was the drama about after the stoppage?

Nakamura's corner didnt want it stopped but he clearly couldnt continue. He needs to be fighting at 185, hopefully UFC give him another shot down there if not I guess we will see him in Sengoku.

I thought it was a a weird stoppage, doesn't saved by the bell count for something anymore? Since when does referees stop fights just after the bell? Give the fighter time to recover during the round break then make a decision if he's capable to continue.

saved by the bell works if your name is ACE

Nakamura seemed to be pretty out, but the ref could've waited until the start of the round 2 to make the decision.

Nakamura couldn't even sit on the chair. I thought it was pretty clear he could not continue nor wanted to.

They probably should wait until the end of the 1 minute break before calling it... but in this case, I don't think he was going to continue anyway.

I can't believe people are complaining that some kind soul save Nakamura's boring life. How badly do you guys want this to be Bloodsport? If the guy can't even sit on a stool how the fuck is he going to fight given another 30 seconds?
Please.

I don't think anyone in this thread has implied that Nakamura could've or should've continued the fight.

From the video it appeared that he might have rolled his right knee or something.

Sokajou had Peter Graham in his corner. He must have been there to help with the kickboxing. I thought the Assasins low kicks were pretty solid, though it helps when the opponent doesn't block them.
No confusion on this stoppage, Nak couldn't even sit on the chair after words and at one time was leaving the ring as if the fight was over.

Then why are people in this thread implying that a mistake was made in stopping the fight?

No, but if you give Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes a chance to recover do the same to Nakamura, a little consistency would be nice.

Franklin and Hughes were both able to stand back up after the bell. Nakamura couldn't even sit. There is a difference. Besides Hughes and Franklin are heroes (to other people I mean, not me), while Nakamura is basically a can. I hate to use that term but it's the truth. Zuffa only has him around to get crushed.

So you are saying it is completely OK to enforce the rules differently if the fighter is more popular?
That to me is far more crazy than thinking giving nak the 30 seconds to see if he could recover or not before calling the fight wouldn't have been a bad idea. Hell, boxers get 10 seconds.

to be fair he did say that franklin and hughes were able to stand back up and everything... that wouldnt have much to do with popularity...

Franklin was clearly fucked though, and the fight could have just as easily been called there.

Slow down VALENTINO!
;)
Of course there is a bit of a double standard (at least it looks that way to me) and I agree that there shouldn't be. I think it's really Hughes and Franklin that stand to be more ripped off by it though. Their safety is compromised to pump up the show. But for some reason Nakamura's safety comes first? At least it was consistent with the other not so saved by the bell stoppage in the BJ/Sherk fight.

True, they were consistant on the day which I guess is the best we can hope for. And personally I have absolutely no issue with either stoppage happening (though I still think Yamazaki was pressured into it by BJ/crowd etc). I just don't particularly like the fact it isn't consistant with previous events....though that is too much to ask for anywhere it seems.

Nakamura needs to fight like middleweight if he ever want to survive in UFC.

Me, I think that it'd be more consistent if in this kind of situations the decision wether to let fighter continue would be made at the end of the break.
No biggie, just an observation.

I'm happy for Sok, he has great potential.
He was really nervous and took his time, he needed the win badly.

I thought Nakamura looked good until the punch landed.

Also the power that Sokoudjou must have impressed me. His right foot was either still in the air or only touched the ground a fraction of a second before the punch landed and still it had the power to knock Naka out.
Same goes for the clothesline punch he ko'd Rogerio with and that strange grazing uppercut he used against Arona.
