A pretty bizarre story from the 'Americas' section of the BBC News website:
Fujimori to woo Peru with drink
Alberto Fujimori says many Peruvians still support him
Peru's ex-President Alberto Fujimori - exiled after a corruption scandal - has pinned his hopes for a political comeback on a cola drink.
He has given his backing to Fuji-Cola, a new drink he claims will "quench the thirst of popular discontent".
The former president's supporters want the drink to boost his profile and fund his campaign for re-election in 2006.
Mr Fujimori fled to Japan in 2000 as his decade-long presidency collapsed in allegations of corruption and torture.
Peruvian prosecutors have been pushing for Japan to extradite him so he can be tried on charges ranging from murder and kidnapping.
Mr Fujimori denies the charges and Japanese authorities have refused all requests for his extradition.
He says he will contest Peru's presidential election next year, despite a ban on him holding public office until 2010.
A spokesman for Mr Fujimori in Lima, Carlos Raffo, told the Reuters news agency the drink is "a creative way to finance his campaign".
"People will associate the drink with all the good feelings they have about Alberto Fujimori," he said.
According to local media, Mr Fujimori's son Kenji has applied for Fuji-Cola to be registered as a trademark for the manufacture of beers, mineral waters and fizzy drinks.

Is there no photo to go with this? I wanna see his cola. lol
He is actually quit a touchy subject in Japan, with most knowing only what the local media feeds them.
I am vey interested to know why he even wants to go back when the chance for some sort of revenge attempts must be extremely high.

Not surprised Fujimori is a touchy subject over there. It's pretty disgusting that someone like him has been living peacefully and in comfort in Japan given what he "allegedly" presided over in Peru.
Was thinking exactly the same thing as you regarding the chance of revenge attacks but the reason he wants to go back is, I think, that Alejandro Toledo's government has severely disappointed people, mainly due to such high expectations going in and the short term price of much needed economic reforms. At times like that people do seem to get nostalgic for the 'stability' offered by the likes of Fujimori. I'm sure there geuninely are people over there who miss him. It's a sick world.

Lets not forget this is the country that let the Japanese cannibal (he ate the french girl in....surprise surprise...france and was extradited to Japan for jailing) walk, after some weeks or months of reform in a mental health clinic. He then became an artist, and has evidentally written books, and is rumoured to live in Kyushu.
The again, many a country has a somewhat comparible dirty pair of undies..

Forgot all about the Japanese cannibal. I actually saw a British TV show a few years ago where the presenter talked to him about it and they showed him going about his normal business perfectly freely. He describe din great detail what happened and talked about the urges he used to have. Very creepy.
Unfortunately there aren't any pictures of the cola on the site. You'll just have to use your imagination, lol.
An unrelated but still very funny note about Fujimori:
In the final months of his rule the story broke everywhere that his spy chief and right-hand man Vladimiro Montesinos (there's a great name for a movie villain) was implicated in hundreds of different bribery, corruption, torture & disappearance scandals and cases that were coming to light. Montesinos went into hiding and Fujimori, in an effort to distance himself from Montesinos decided to track him down. Of course, since Fujimori was also implicated in these and Montesinos had the hard evidence he never actually wanted to find him in case he talked.
So, there he was, running around leather jacketed going through this ridiculous charade of personally searching for him. He took a few high ranking army officers and a TV crew who broadcast pictures live on Peruvian TV while Fujimori was looking in cupboards and under beds at various different military facilities. Montesinos of course wasn't going to be at any of these places and even if he was Fujimori's arrival (he was hardly sneaking around) would have scared him off. This went on for almost a full day. And amazingly, Fujimori never found him.
I am not making this up.

In cupboards AND under beds and he never found him? Nohhhhh....
You must be lying! lol
It really is sad how stupid the television viewer really is....or how easy they are to fool....or how little they care...

He never found him. Truly incredible. Maybe if he'd just tried one more door, just one more, Montesinos would have emerged said "I'm sorry, I've been a naughty boy" and Fujimori could have given him a right old telling off. Maybe even a Toukon Slap.
As for the TV audience, well I'm not really sure how they took to this but I do have a picture somewhere of Fujimori, in his hardman leather coat running around.
