Three days later and I'm still overexcited. Thought I'd share a tale of my shameless marking out with you all.
Went to the TWC (actually they had nothing to do with it it was basically an FWA show) International Supershow in Coventry, England on March 19th. A mate who works for Powerslam and has a total ignorance of pro wrestling outside WWE was covering the show so I went along to help out with his report. That got me an Access All Areas pass. When we got there Misawa was being interviewed so I waited until it was over and grabbed a photographer. Now, Misawa speaks little English I speak even less Japanese so I had to grin, gesture wildly and physically hold onto him so I could get a photo. Not sure what he was thinking but he didn't look particularly impressed (stony faced as usual) while this shamelessly grinning tool stood there with the biggest grin imaginable on his face. I don't think he liked me much.
Problem is the photo wasn't taken with a digital camera so the guy is going to have to develop and post it to me. He promised to do this and I know how to get his phone number and address so if he doesn't, well, the potential Mellish rage doesn't bear thinking about. Once I get it, its being enlarged, getting framed and going on my living room wall, along with a signed pic of Danny Williams KO'ing Mike Tyson and my 1970s & 80s Soviet propaganda posters.
Misawa was there as part of a NOAH 6 man match and the show was taped for DVD release.
Mitsuharu Misawa, Yoshinari Ogawa & Tiger Emperor
v.
Doug Williams, Scorpio & James Tighe
Misawa got a great reaction from the crowd and it was cool to see him live. He didn't do a massive amount but didn't need to. There was a small chant of "We Want Elbows" at him early on and people popped for him pounding on James Tighe. Kotaro Suzuki did a pretty good Tiger Mask impersonation and James performed very well and deserves a shot with NOAH. Match was typical NOAH 6 man - it was always going to be Tighe or Suzuki doing the job and was obvious they were going about 20. First 15mins or so were very well wrestled but not all that exciting but the last 5 were great. Quite lazy booking and match layout but everyone was great and made it exciting. Suzuki and Williams did some great stuff together and Williams beat him with the Chaos Theory. Very, very good match.
