View Full Version : Carter Williams MMA Traning?

Carter Williams move into MMA looks promising. He's got a short, stocky build for close-combat and a powerful K-1 kick and punch. Entertaining fighter. I see CW got some MMA fights to his credit before entering K-1. There's 2 wins and 1 loss. Wins by armbar and strikes, loss by TKO. I'm thinking Tom Howard will not outstrike or knock out CW, so this is going to the ground. Being recognized as mainly a K-1 fighter, anybody out there that's seen CW in these MMA fights or know what he's training? Like JJ, BJJ, wrestling.

Carters punches do seem to pack some power behind them for sure, so if they land it`ll be good night Tom.

I haven`t seen any of Carters MMA fights, and have only seen one of Toms; in which he got rather busted open but fought on even while taking quite a pounding.

I`ll give Carter the benifit of the doubt reguarding his MMA preperation, and say he should confortably take this, but I don`t think Tom is a simple push over....I hope someone that has seen Carters MMA fights can shed some light here.

Sorry, I haven't seen any of Willaims' MMA fights but I can give you some info on Tom Howard.

While he's definitely a tough guy he is first, and foremost a pro wrestler who's really doing MMA because he can make better money (with his K-1 deal) than he can on his level of the pro wrestling circuit (places like UPW in America and Zero One in Japan don't exactly pay huge money to their wrestlers). It's certainly possible he's worked out with Hirotaka Yokoi in the past as both were on many of the same Zero One shows but I can't confirm that.

With William's previous experience, and obviously huge advantage in striking I expect him to KO Howard sometime around the 3 minute mark.

When I asked Carter if he was interested in fighting MMA in Romanex post fight in Nagoya this year.....he asked if I was talking about PRIDE....the K-1 staff eyes all got a touch too wide for a second there. lol

Anyway, Carter is young with more MMA experience( marginal ), more MMA wins, and way more ring experience. So, ruling out any huge improvement Tom has made since Romanex, I`ll give this one to Carter too.

I see Voodoo has joined up here....hopefully he can add something about Carters training/condition for this one.

This time will be the first time ROTR is going to be shown in Japan on SkaPa....though 2 or 3 weeks delayed.

Sounds like a pattern is forming in this thread with most feeling the same way.

Is this then ment as a gift for carter to get him back in the game again, and maybe to the New Years Eve event in Japan?

Is Carter really that big in Japan that this would make sense? I bill it as another Kickboxing vs Pro Wrestling match.
Remember Howard also had a MMA match vs Blue Wolf (Asashoryu's brother and Pro Wrestler) and we never heard of Blue Wolf again (at least not in association with MMA). So I don't think Howard is used as a stepping stone for MMA hopefulls.

Somebody that knows the answer will have to answer this one. He always comes to Japan to throw down and bring the action so it's a "safe card" for them to get some action in the fight. I think Williams or his coach recognizes that's his trademark and will do their best to live up to those expectations.

Williams is not plain kickboxing here. He competed in MMA before and has some level of training in it. I suppose the question is how much time has he spent kickboxing on behalf of MMA training recently. How long have they known about the possible matchup and trained for MMA? The training is different in the two, and especially requires him to mix it up with his sparring partners a bit. I think Japan considers him a kind of crowd-pleaser and want to see whether he's marketable in MMA. If he would be, that'd make some interesting match-ups. I'll fantasize about a Sam Greco vs Carter Williams mach-up. Those two could probably raise hell bringing out the best in each other.

Hi guys , sorry could'nt get on sooner but had some memory problems like remembering passwords and stuff.
Anyway "Yes" were getting ready for the K-1 RUMBLE ON THE ROCK in Hawaii on the 20th of Nov, and Carter is very excited to be on track again.

He seemed to get quite a push behind him after his fight with Sefo. I see him and Mo as the great hopes K-1 has for really making a mark on the US market.

Blue Wolf is currently pro wrestling for New Japan. His doing the MMA match with with Tom Howard was really due to his wrestling background and family connections. Oh and New Japan's bizarre habit of having their employees do real fights. I don't think it was ever really meant to launch an MMA career, just get him some press as a pro wrestler if he won the fight.

If we could compare Hunt and Carter, Carter has got more potential as MMA fighter than Hunt, he is faster, versatile and younger... I'm really looking forward to see his transition into MMA, specially when we know that his K-1 went into dead end lately... only one win in last couple of fights, and over Vondrachek in the fight where Carter could have been dq-fied

Thanks guys it was great ,Tom was tough but I brought my game.
by no way was this guys a pushover, pro wrestler or whatever he was strong.
But I was training hard on my reversels and such and controled myself.
We had the best time and were treated TOP NOTCH, Limo, surfing, snorkling, swimming, sightseeing and so much more GOD IS GOOD!
VanDam was there with LaBanner they were pretty chummy.
Akebono and my brother BEAR (cornerman) are pals and partyed like it was 1999!
That was the most beautiful places I've ever been, gotta go back.

Very cool to know you are both here.

Seems from the story on the front page that the work you did on your reversals paid off. Tom mounted you and you got up?!?! Quite impressive.

Are you now concentrating on MMA or K-1, or doing them both?

Hi Carter here....
Im looking for what keeps me in the game ,I love the fight game and stand up or ground its all good , But I have to stand by my first goal and that to be a K-1 champion someday.
Man I love the ground and pound to so it's kinda hard but we'll see .
I'll fight wherever or who-ever how-ever don't matter as long as I get to fight.

just bumping this as I saw Carter on IL saying he is training MMA seriously now and he seems to be more focused on that than kickboxing now.

good. he can be a good mma fighter is he puts the time into it. sadly, i dont see him winning a wgp. so he might as well try new things. if he can get completly comfortable grappling (ie wrestling to stop takedowns), then hes gonna be able to be successful.

Shit if Carter goes to MMA and I read somewhere about Mighty Mo going to Showtime's MMA who the hell in the U.S. can do anything in K-1?
